mellicious: pink manicure (brain leaking)
Somehow Rob talked me into seeing The DaVinci Code yesterday, and I have to admit that it wasn't a bad movie. I think the problem is that it's dragging around too much baggage. There's that book, which I haven't read but which everybody seems to either love or hate - and most of my friends seem to be in the latter group, so I'm guessing I'd be likely to be there too, were I to read it. There's the whole Tom Hanks/Ron Howard factor - another love-'em-or-hate-'em thing, in general, and I am usually pretty much in the latter category there too. I hear, too, that there's all sorts of religious controversy, which of course doesn't have much impact on me, not being of a religious persuasion. (Although I have been much entertained lately by Rob's stories about one of his co-workers, who seems to think that it's Satanic or some such thing, and was scandalized that he was actually going to go see it.)

Here's the way I think you should approach The DaVinci Code: it's totally a popcorn movie. Rob had said it reminded him of National Treasure and I think he's exactly right about that. Remember National Treasure? Nic Cage and a blond archivist and a comic sidekick and clues written on the Declaration of Independence, for god's sake? Nobody even threatened to take that movie seriously, and really, the two are awfully damn similar, we just have Tom instead of Nic and a brunette cryptologist instead of the blond archivist, although no comic sidekick unless you count Ian McKellan - and instead of Sean Bean as the bad guy there's nearly-naked albino Paul Bettany (normally I would say that nearly-naked Paul Bettany was good thing, if it wasn't for that nasty self-flagellation business, because ewww). And the clues here are written on the Mona Lisa and self-destructing code-thingys designed by Leonardo, blah blah blah. You get the idea.

I saw somewhere that DaVinci's business was down around 60% from last week, so I guess all the fans went the first week. There were still a lot of people in the theater yesterday when we went, though.
