Rift
Probably nobody but
columbina is really interested, but I feel the need to yap about Rift, and I hate to spam my Twitter account about it any more than I've already done, so y'all get a dose of it instead. (Actually I counted 25+ posts about it over the past two weeks or so, which I suppose doesn't quite rise to the level of spamming. But it's bad enough.)
If you have no idea what I'm talking about and you want to, I'll direct you to Col's post on Rift because I don't really intend to go over all the basic stuff about the game. I suspect this post is going to be more about technical stuff, which is why I don't think most people will read too far.
The thing is, Head Start starts tomorrow. That means our previous characters from the beta are gone and we're starting over, and what we do this time we're more-or-less stuck with. (Knowing your characters are doing to be deleted is both freedom and frustration, because at least you're not stuck with your mistakes. On the other hand, if you're going to keep playing, you're going to be doing all these same quests over again next week.) What I did last time was, I made two characters on the Guardian side and two on the Defiant side (although one of those I didn't play much), one each in all of the four "callings" - which means the basic classes, Warrior, Mage, Cleric, and Rogue. So at least I've sort of tried everything. The one I didn't play much was the Cleric, but it wasn't so much that there was anything wrong with it, I just ran out of time, mostly. So I'll be giving it another try, at some point. (Also Col was playing a cleric, and so I didn't see any real point in making another cleric to play with him, it seemed more logical to play something else. And most of my non-Col playing time got taken up by my warrior, who I thought was especially fun to play, and then by my ranger/rogue. The poor druid cleric got shafted.)
So, I'm still trying to decide which characters are going to be on which side, and what builds I'm going to use, and stuff like that. (Am I going to give them the same names? that's another burning question. Mostly I'm thinking yes.)
OK, what the hell, let's go down the list of my beta characters:
1. Ranau the warrior - Defiant - paragon/something/something (I can't believe I took all those screenshots and forgot to take one of her build. But it was whatever the game recommended to go with paragon, anyway.) She was a Bahmi, which is a race of people supposed to be descended from... well, I'm not sure, some sort of fairies or spirits or something or other of that sort. Which makes very little sense since fairies are generally very small and the Bahmi are very large. Which is why they make good warriors, right? Supposedly they are taking away the special race-based abilities, meaning I don't actually need to make my new warrior a Bahmi, but I'm sort of fond of her so I think she'll essentially be the same. I'm waffling about her name a bit - "Ranau" was a name the game suggested and it doesn't really fall trippingly off the tongue. I might change it to "Renau" which feels a bit more natural to me. I might toy with her build and give her a pet, although I don't know why she really needs it. But I didn't really use whatever I had (besides Paragon) that much, either. I'm still working this one out. But she's staying Defiant, and Col, I think you're going to be playing with her. - Oh, and also, her main craft was armorcrafting, which was pretty useful so I think I'll keep that.
2. Marte the rogue - was Guardian in beta, may stay that way. I think if you want a basically ranger-type build, you pretty much have to go with Ranger/Marksman/something (her something was Saboteur, which I never did use but will probably stick with anyway - I suspect it will come in handy later). The game also suggested "Marte" to me but I had actually used it for one of my characters in WoW and I rather like it. The pet was a "razorbeast" - i.e., a pig - which I promptly named Bacon. I dislike cutesy names for characters but for some reason I have no problem with them for pets in-game. Craft: outfitter, which is light armor. Also seems useful. (Actually none of the crafts seems like a total waste, here.)
3. Lilin the mage - was Guardian, will probably become Defiant, which means changing her look, which I was rather fond of. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, though. It'd be boring to keep everything exactly the same, right? Also, I did some research and decided to try Stormcaller for her main mage subclass, instead of Pyromancer. "SC" - as the experts on the forum call it - is supposed to have even more DPS than Pyro. And if I hate it, I can always get another "role" and start over. I was also toying with trying Necromancer instead of Elementalist for the secondary class, but apparently the Necro pet is a DPS pet, while the rock guy that the Ele's get is a tank, naturally. And I'd rather stick with tank. (A pet is said to become fairly unimportant at high levels, anyway.) And I think I'm sticking with Chloromancer for the third soul, because of the heals. I'm putting 0 points in elementalist, which will leave me plenty of points in the other two - another tip I found on the forums. We'll see how well it works. Lilin's craft was artificer, which is a type of weaponcrafting especially for mages - staffs and wands, mostly. And I think I rather like her name. It was another game suggestion, but I tried various other "Lily" variations - Lilia, Lillian and so forth - before settling for Lilin. If I get in early enough I might even get Lily, although I don't really think I care. My plan is to get in and create all the characters first, thus (a) getting it over with, and (b) getting the names locked down.
4. Sharzad the cleric - she was a druid/shaman... something, and she was a Defiant, which I might change. Or I might not. I might even wait on creating this one. For one thing, I'm not entirely crazy about her name, which is one I used in GW (and actually was the name of an Iranian friend of mine in school) so why worry about getting it locked down? If I wait , I can wait to decide which side she's on, too. The main reason to have a druid is the cool fairy pet, by the way - although it makes me uncomfortable to call something humanoid a "pet". But that's what the game calls it, as I recall. Druids are actually partly meleers, and I like playing melee, so I think I might enjoy this one if I ever get around to giving it a longer try.
(I need to go to bed at some point soon, I have a doctor's appointment in the morning So I guess it's time to shut up now.)
