The day after

Strangely, I am better today. Well, I suppose there could hardly be a worse day than yesterday (short of, y'know, a chance meeting with Ted Bundy or something), so it almost had to get somewhat better. Still, I seem to be ok. I may go back to being a basket case later, but for now, I am not too bad.

Even better, I don't have to do anything at all tomorrow. This is a luxury I never imagined having this weekend. (I'm really tempted to turn off both phones, too.)

The funeral is not till Wednesday. Some sort of problem with the church. I didn't realize until we were on the way home that that's Valentine's Day, but oh well (as I seem to be fond of saying lately). Luckily, V-Day was never my favorite holiday anyway. I am just a bit worried about the big flower arrangement I was going to get, given the timing, but I have put off thinking about it until Monday. By the time we got it all straightened out it was too late to do anything today. I was not intending to do red roses in any case, so surely they can find me something decent-looking.

Thanks everybody for the good wishes. I haven't made any attempt to reply, for the most part, but I read every one of them, and I really do appreciate it.

Oh, did I say that my mother apparently wanted to ban black from her funeral? (So my sister says, anyway.) This amuses me no end. I have a new black shirt I was intending to wear, but now I am really tempted to wear red. Or bright pink. We will see if I have the nerve.

If you decide the hot pink is a bit much, you could probably get away with very dark blue. That way you'd honor her wishes and still look funereal.

I think dark blue is not in the spirit of the thing. My sister says she specifically said bright colors. I only said pink or red because of valentine's day, though - maybe purple would be a good compromise. I wore a purple suit to my grandmother's funeral, I know, and nobody seems to have batted an eye.

(Actually I am somewhat more worried about whether anybody expects me to wear a dress. I haven't worn one in three or four years - I don't think I even own anything any more that would do. My current plan is just to wear pants, unless I stumble across a fabulous dress in the next three days.)

Do turn off the phone if you possibly can. If there's a voicemail where you can change the message easily, noting that that's what you've done is probably kind, but even if you can only turn them off for a few hours, giving yourself the break definitely sounds worthwhile to me.

We all wore shades of purple to [livejournal.com profile] markgritter's grandmother's funeral, because it was her favorite color. It was a lovely tribute, and no one batted an eye.

My grandpa was a Presby minister, and he said "no black!" for his funeral, too. Bright colors, suitable for celebrating a life (and, if you believe in it, an afterlife), were best.

You could always wear a colorful hat. Bottom line, though, is that anyone who dares to criticize you for what you wear is a jerk. It's a memorial service, and it's totally fitting that you would want people to share happy memories about how much they enjoyed having your mom be a part of their lives. And also to dress the part.

Well, now some e-mails that went out to a whole bunch of people have the "bright colors" thing in them, so I think I have to do it. Still have no clue what I'm wearing, though.
