It becomes a money thing, mostly - once it starts looking like there's a clear winner the donors stop donating. So dropping out is not unusual.

If this means we end up with a McCain/Huckabee ticket, I am going to be really goddamned furious if the Democrats can't pull this out.

Also, not like I didn't already think that Romney is an asshole, but the implication that the country automatically "surrenders to terrorists" if the Democrats win is so unbelievably offensive I don't even know what to say.

This is bad. Romney was the Democrats best hope in November.

He is majorly creepy, but Huckabee while a nicer, more sincere person, is even more frightening when you listen to what he believes in.

I agree with the "best hope" part, in the sense that I believe either Clinton or Obama would have stomped him in the fall. But having him as a nominee still would have scared me silly. (And yeah, I know Huckabee is much worse, really. But I just have this reflexive "ugh" reaction to Romney.)

Seconding both parts of what he said. (Look, folks, I am agreeing completely with Robert!)

Although it was already damned unlikely, I was hoping Romney would stay in until the convention, since there was still a slim chance he could triumph in a brokered nomination (since McCain has so many enemies within the Republican factions). I would have loved to have seen Romney as the Republican nominee simply because I believe the Democrats could beat him. I'm not at all sure they can beat McCain.

(Huckabee, of course, is the real danger, but Huckabee has shown exactly where his base is and it's not enough to elect him, and furthermore, he's running out of money.)

I suspect we are looking at a McCain presidency, which is not the worst possible outcome, to my mind, but is far from the best one either.
