mellicious: I call this the "boom de yada" song, I don't know its actual name (boomdeyada)
I'm not doing so well at Holidailies - well, I've done a few entries, but it's already the 13th and I've done (pause while I go and count) five whole (short) entries. In my defense, I've been sickly, and it just seems not to be going away. Rob has recovered much better than I have.

We were talking idly about going to see
Hamnet tomorrow, but really I intend to sleep all day, and the city holiday parade is also tomorrow - it's not impossible to get out during it, because it only goes down the main road and so you can get out by the back ways. But I bet we don't. We probably will go and get the fajitas that we put off last week - that will be Sunday, though.

(We can still go see Hamnet later, anyway - I assume it will still be around!)

Oh, Canada

I partly am using this icon to remind myself that I need to take the fall leaves decor off our balcony and put out the red-and-silver stuff instead. Our balcony is pretty visible so I feel like I have to keep up. (I don't usually put up lights, though. Too much trouble. I just do garlands on the railing and a wreath on the balcony door.)

Somebody mentioned baseball in their post and that reminds me that I got chided for rooting for the Blue Jays in the World Series - they're not American. I was like, whatever. First of all, since the Astros are in the American League* these days, I tend to be more familiar with AL teams. And also, I habitually root against any team with a ridiculously high payroll - mostly meaning the Dodgers and the Yankees. And also, look at a map - Toronto is barely further north than Milwaukee. I have trouble thinking of them as "foreign" even if they do speak French sometimes.

I started this post when it was still Dec. 1st, and now December 3rd is already over and it's still not posted. This may end up being a lot of really short entries, but that's ok, right?

*There's also the point that the Blue Jays also play in the American League, so I guess MLB agrees with me?

mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (doomed)
I'm off until 2025 (which sounds good but is all of, what, 10 days?) but I'm part-time so of course I don't get paid, either. I'm not complaining, though. I did tell them I'd work if they needed me to, and I did my time working weekends and holidays when I first had this job.

UT just beat Clemson, and they're going to the Peach Bowl against Arizona State. This playoff thing feels a little weird to me, but the old bowl system, where all the high-ranked teams played one bowl game each and then some guys voted on who was #1 - that was pretty weird too.

I'm re-reading the Expanse series, mostly because I was reading my old journal entries from when I was reading it before. But I checked and I haven't re-read it since 2021 - was that when the last book came out? It may have been. So it's been three years, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm almost to the end of the second book. I don't know if I'm really going to read the whole nine books right now though.

I'm not doing so great at writing daily. Maybe now that I'm home for the duration I'll do better!

mellicious: Happy New Year! (new year gif)
Whee, I have a car - it's a used car so I guess it doesn't literally have the new-car smell, but you get the idea. It's this one (nope, the pictures went away sometime overnight. '21 Kia Forte in black, a nice little sedan that from the inside feels just like my Corolla did except it has more bells & whistles.)

So we spent the whole afternoon at the dealer, but they were very nice and we had our pre-approved loan so it could have taken way longer. We watched some of the Orange Bowl while we were waiting, which, wow, Florida State can't really complain any more about getting screwed by the bowl committee, can they? (Maybe Georgia can, though.)

We pretty much deliberately stay home on NYE because I'm afraid of running into drunk drivers ("amateur drinkers," somebody said), and anyway, Rob drinks one glass of wine a day and I rarely drink at all any more, so we're not big partiers these days. We're going to out to eat with my sister and BIL on Monday, that's our celebration.

I may do some year-end wrap-up entries between now and Monday. We'll see if I get my shit together on that.

mellicious: blinky holiday lights (holiday lights gif)
My sister texted me over the weekend, wanting to go to Cheesecake Factory one night this week. I'm like, "Um, no, sorry, we have to work all week!" and she just couldn't believe that. I'm thinking, Christmas isn't actually next week (well, it is now but it wasn't then) and it's not unreasonable that we have to work this week. We're state employees - actually we're university employees, but the bulk of our funding comes from the state, so we get the number of holidays that the state legislature says we get. The university has been trying to spread them out over the year more recently, I've noticed, meaning we don't get as many in December as we used to. But I'm fine with that. And actually I noticed that the local schools still seem to be in session this week also, so it's not just us. (And we're going to try to go to Cheesecake Factory on Saturday.)

Honestly, our Christmas celebrations have gotten very minimalist these days and I'm fine with that, too. We're going over to my sister's house and having hamburgers, I think she said! Frankly, I associate Christmas the old way with a heck of a lot of stress and I guess she does too. We do mostly small gifts and eat something that's simple to prepare. I'm much happier with it that way.

Oh, we do have a tree, a tiny one. (I think we may still have a somewhat bigger one boxed up somewhere but we don't usually bother to get it out.) I went in Target several weeks ago and they had these little tabletop trees in a bunch of colors, not just the usual green; they were on sale, and I bought a red one, and gold ornaments. (Then I ended up buying more tiny-scaled ornaments - apparently even a tiny tree can hold more than I would have guessed!) It's cute, I like it.

Still here

mellicious: "I have nothing significant to say" (in a thought bubble) (nothing significant - quote)
I haven't posted since last December 31st, apparently, but interestingly, we were watching The Batman then, and we watched it again today. (Presumably the first time since then, it's not something we'd really watch all that often!) We also watched the Dr Who special (man, I've missed David Tennant!), part of Aquaman (because we'd watched the 1st half of it last night) and part of Green Lantern, which was just as bad as everybody always says it is. I know that's an awful lot of TV, but what can I say, it's the end of the holiday weekend and we didn't really have anything else to do today.

Anyway, it suddenly occurred to me that I haven't posted here at all in 2023, and that it was almost time for Holidailies, which I have been doing for approximately a million years. So I thought I might update a couple of times this week to warm up, as it were.

mellicious: Happy New Year! (new year gif)
Happy New Year, y'all. 2021 wasn't a bad year for me personally, but it was a pretty bad year for the world in general, wasn't it? Insurrections, climate change, ugh. So let's hope 2022 is going to be an improvement. (I'm not really holding my breath for that, I'm afraid.)

If I get around to it in time, I'll do a movie wrap-up tomorrow. (I'll probably put it up even if I don't manage to do it in time to post it on Holidailies. The last couple of years I have been posting periodically about movies here even if I don't post about anything else.)

Assuming I don't finish any more books before midnight, the list of new novels I've read this year is going to end at 69. (This is not meant to be a fiction-only list, but apparently the only non-fiction books I finished were a handful of Civil War books that I had already read some years ago. Nothing new.) I highlighted a few things that stood out to me, some of which were actually new books (Winterkeep, Leviathan Falls) and some of which were not new this year but I hadn't gotten around to reading before (News of the World, Lock In).

As far as series go, I really enjoyed the "Lady Julia" series, which are period mysteries, and the "Lily Bard" series, which is categorized as a "dark cozy" mystery series, as I understand it (written by Charlaine Harris, who also wrote the "True Blood" series). I probably read more mysteries this year than I've read in some years, or possibly ever - I can't be sure about that since I only recently started keeping lists of my reading again.

(I really think it's kind of absurd to even post my list at all, but I posted it once before so I figured I would update. I don't ever keep up on Goodreads so this is the only place it's online.) (And I don't consider it a competition. I don't work full-time so I have a lot more reading time than most people.)

I don't particularly set any goals for myself about reading, normally. I read plenty already, I don't have to encourage myself to do that, in general. Left to myself I re-read an awful lot, so that's why I have started keeping up with how much new stuff I read. I did set a goal for myself last year to read 18 books that were new to me, and I passed that ages ago. The only goal I have set myself for the future is to keep reading at least a couple of new things a month. And I made a "to-read" list - it started with an idea I'd seen to do "22 books to read in '22" but I hit 22 and kept going - I have an whole lot of unread books on my Kindle, so I guess you'd have to say getting through some of that list is also a goal.

mellicious: Happy New Year! (new year gif)
We went to see Licorice Pizza (me and Rob and my sister and her husband, too) and I honestly don't quite know what to make of it. It was interesting but I didn't love it. My sister thought dating a 15-year-old boy made you a pedophile, and while I don't feel like that's quite true, for a 25-year-old girl to date a 15-year-old boy is pretty damn weird. (And presumably illegal, these days. I guess it wasn't, back then?) Anyway, it's a coming-of-age movie set in the 70s, in case you don't know this part already, and it's well-made - it's Paul Thomas Anderson, of course it is - and the boy is Phillip Seymour Hoffman's son (who was apparently 17 at the time they filmed this) and the girl is Alana Haim, the musician. The rest of the Haim sisters are in it too, playing (guess!) her sisters, and her parents are played by their actual parents. I guess that makes casting easier! The first half of it just rambles and the second half has a bit more plot but it's still hard to figure out where it's meant to be going. I read that Anderson based it at least partly on some stories he'd been told by a guy who had been a child actor (as Hoffman's character is), so maybe it rambles because that's what real life does, I don't know. My brother-in-law hated it so he's going to be pissed if it wins all the Oscars, which they seem to think it might.

(Meanwhile, we're going to go see the Spiderman movie again this weekend.)

I had kind of a trying time at work this week, most everybody is off and our cranky computer system went down again, and every time that happens, our IT department and the vendor that makes the software have difficulty talking to each other - and so this week when everybody is understaffed in the first place it's even worse. I'll be surprised if it gets fixed before Monday. Plus we're on covid protocols again and that made everything a little more difficult - not with the vendor, but with everybody else! But I'm done for the week so it's all somebody else's problem.

Oh, that book I was reading (or not-reading, actually) before, called In a Holidaze, turned out to be a Groundhog Day thing, which didn't really grab me at first, either, but I kept going this time and it was actually pretty good. I won't tell you spoilers other than that, though.

mellicious: blinky holiday lights (holiday lights gif)
It's still Christmas Eve my time as I'm writing this, but it'll be Christmas Day by the time I post it, no doubt, so merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it - and I guess, happy Saturday to the rest of you!

(I'm totally going to have my sense of the days of the week messed up until after 2022 starts, I can tell already. Normally I work on Fridays but I'm off, and next week I'm working different days than I normally do, so I'm just accepting in advance that I'm gonna be confused.)

So even though we're not actually religious, we still celebrate Christmas at least in sort of a half-assed way - not as much as a way of avoiding the religious bits as just to make it less stressful. So today (meaning Christmas Eve) we stayed home, but tomorrow we're going over to my sister & bro-in-law's, but we're just having subs and stuff like that. (Rob seemed slightly put-out by this, and he got us a lasagne to have today at home - but I know he doesn't really want to be the one who cooks any more than P & I do!) And we're only doing sort of token gifts tomorrow. I have a bunch of FabFitFun leftovers I'm giving my sister, because I got several of those boxes this past year, and we got chocolates for the b-i-l, something we know he likes. Rob found a Mandalorian pillow somewhere! that was one of my surprise gifts, and there was a big bag of something heavy that's meant for tomorrow, he said. (I'm guessing it's Dollar Tree finds.) I have a Black Friday find for him - an electric wine-bottle opener - and his main gift is some gigantic (and literally ridiculously heavy) comic-book anthologies that he had asked for. (My main gift was getting my hair professionally cut and colored, because I said when I stopped working full-time that I wasn't going to have it colored any more. So making it my Christmas gift absolves me of having to feel guilty about going back on that.)

Rob had never seen Mean Girls, and I thought of it because of that one scene with the Christmas pageant, and so we watched that, earlier. I think he enjoyed it pretty well. I said it's really something you need to see anyway just to understand those "fetch" jokes, etc. (Then we watched part of Willow, also - and there was a little promo with Warwick Davis up about the new Willow show which apparently is going to be out sometime next year. I knew they were doing it but I didn't know what the ETA on it was.)

Sunday we think we're going to go see Licorice Pizza, and we are agreed we both want to see Spider-man again at some point. I guess that will probably have to be next weekend, since I'm working during the week. Rob is off all next week, so he may go see Nightmare Alley one of those days when I'm working, since I can't work up too much interest in that one.
mellicious: "I think the subtext here is rapidly becoming text." (subtext Buffy quote)
I have several holiday romance novels/novellas, so I'm prioritizing reading those, before Christmas passes and I decide I'm out of the mood to read them. I'm very much a mood-based reader, which is one reason I usually have several things going at once. (Me, talking to myself: "No, I'm not in the mood to read that right now, what else have we got?") I have some Regency ones, and something that was recommended called In a Holidaze - I assume it's a romance although I actually know nothing about it at all. If I looked at the info when I bought it I've already forgotten what it said.

I also bought the set of novellas that goes with that Thanksgiving one that I liked - I think the overall title is Holidays with the Wongs. There's the Thanksgiving one and and one for Christmas, Chinese New Year, and something else... Valentine's Day? New Year's Eve? Again, I read the titles but that last one didn't stick.

I also bought one more $1.99 romance from Amazon - I was about to say I don't remember the title but I just found where I wrote it down - it's Sleigh Bells Ring. It was in either an Amazon Books e-mail or a Book Riot because those are the only book e-mails I get right now. (And I buy too much stuff already so I sure don't need any more!) I remember thinking that this one sounded like a Hallmark movie - the convoluted plot, the good-looking but annoying boss/new neighbor/whatever, etc.

I enjoy Hallmark movies occasionally. Lest you think I'm a sad, unromantic, Christmas-hating old lady, I will tell you that I was pretty much in tears due to a story I read yesterday involving a lonely teacher, an orphan, and a viscount, all discovering the magic of Christmas together. (Do Americans other than Regency/Bridgerton fans even know what a viscount is? much less how to pronounce it - I only know that last part from some BBC Jane Austen adaptations, I think!) Anyway, my problem with Hallmark (and y'know, all those other channels that do the same thing) is that the plots rarely make any sense whatsoever. I'm not incredibly picky about this, even, but just a little logic goes a long way with me. I suspect the main problem is that they churn these things out so fast that they don't have time to worry over little stuff like the script. So I have to space my Hallmark (/Lifetime/etc.) movie-watching out so I don't start tearing my hair out.

I'll just go back to my reading instead.

mellicious: Narnia witch in a carriage pulled by polar bears, captioned "OMGWTFPOLARBEAR!" (polar bear & witch - m15m)
I picked up Lord of the Rings in a Kindle edition, because it was on sale, and I thought, well, that'd be a good thing to read again over the holidays. And I read maybe the first chapter, and I thought, hmm, maybe I should read The Hobbit too while I'm at it. (I've read them both many times but not in some years.) So I went looking for my copy of it and all I could find was my very ancient paperback copy - I read it for English class in, like, 1973 or 74 - cover price $1.50. But I'm pretty sure that one would just fall apart if I tried to read it - I kept it mostly because it's got that old cover that I love. (Ooh, it's the middle one here - so '74. But I also remember that one on the left with the drawing of The Hill.) I thought I had bought a new copy, a trade paperback, at some point, but I haven't been able to find it, if I did. (I found Unfinished Tales and Lost Tales and some stuff like that that I doubt I've ever read at all. But no Hobbit.)

So I was thinking, ok, I guess I'll skip it after all, and then lo and behold, Amazon had it on sale too yesterday. (Amazon is usually utterly terrible at recommending things for me to read, especially considering they've got 20 years of my book-buying history to draw on! Or maybe they recommend it to everybody, I don't know. - Then again, if Amazon was good at that, would Goodreads even exist?)

So anyway, I got The Hobbit, Kindle edition, and I'm reading it, and, well, I'm not really into it so far. I think, for one thing, that I've practically got chunks of it memorized, especially the Unexpected Party bits at the beginning. So that's not good for reading it and having it feel fresh! And also, since I've been an adult, the hobbits being cute is not really my favorite part of these books. I'm always happier when they get the hell out of The Shire. Anyway, I'm plowing through, and they're at Rivendell, and hopefully my interest will perk up from here.

mellicious: blinky holiday lights (holiday lights gif)
I end up mentioning the "Christmas Eve gift" thing practically every Christmas (look in the comments here for more into), but Rob and I have been married for, what, 33 years now (!!) and he said it to me today without any prompting whatsoever - I'm pretty sure it's the first time he's ever done that. I guess he's heard it an awful lot over the years, though - he was around when my grandma and my mother used to go around saying it every year, after all. (Then I looked at my phone and my sister had already texted me to say it, as well. If it's a contest to see who can say it first, then she won.)

We had our "Christmas dinner" today and are just going to have leftovers tomorrow. It was nothing fancy, though - lasagna and apple pie. And we watched While You Were Sleeping, which I hadn't seen in years and years. (I remembered who Sandra ended up with but I couldn't exactly remember how it all worked out.) We enjoyed it. And it's sort of a Christmas movie - basically in the Die Hard sense, where Christmas is just going on in the background but isn't really that integral to the plot. -- Disney+ has it in the holiday movie section, if you have that and you want an easy way to find it.

Our original plan was to drive to San Antonio tomorrow, and that's a really long drive and I can't say I'm sorry we didn't have to do it! I did get to see my sister briefly last week, and in a few months they'll be here (15-20 minutes away, that is) full-time. I haven't lived that close to my sister since we lived in the same house, a million years ago.

mellicious: "I think the subtext here is rapidly becoming text." (subtext Buffy quote)
I have sort of a fraught relationship with the holidays, nowadays. I guess a lot of people do. I used to love Christmas. I was brought up in what would now be called an evangelical family - Baptists, and in Texas (Southern Baptist, which didn't especially mean anything to me back then). So I was taught that the story of Jesus' birth was absolutely factual, but I don't know that I really internalized it that way. (I remember that when I was little, I thought that when we sang "Jesus Loves Me" and it said "the Bible tells me so" that the Bible was, like, a fairy or something. I just think little kids don't really take in all that stuff, do they? I thought that maybe Jesus was real and maybe fairies might be, too!)

Anyway, the thing was, nobody made any effort to separate out the religious and the non-religious aspects of Christmas. But we always went to my grandparents' house for Christmas, and we didn't go to church on Christmas Eve, that I recall, or do anything specifically religious other than somebody saying a prayer before dinner. (Which was something we always did for formal meals, so that wasn't anything out of the ordinary, either.)

Even after I decided as a teenager that I didn't actually believe all that stuff (meaning religion in general, not just Santa Claus and fairies!), it really didn't change the way I thought about Christmas a whole lot. I no longer thought that the stories were literally true, if I ever did, but I still enjoyed Christmas. Actually I think I'm kind of a natural skeptic - I started poking holes in the Santa Claus story earlier than a lot of kids do, and I suspect I felt the same way about religion generally, even if it took me a kind of a long time to admit it to myself.

I guess it also made a difference to me, in a way, that I was in choir (school choir and church choir both, for a long time) and honestly, when it comes to Christmas music, religious Christmas music tends to be superior to the secular stuff. They may not play much of it on iHeart radio, but when you're singing in four-part harmony, Christmas carols are the best.

I used to think that I wished I could be a believer, because it would make life easier. I don't really think that any more, but I do wish we could do Christmas the way we used to, just celebrate it in our own irreligious way without worrying about it. I don't much think that's possible any more, though. The blasted War on Christmas business has made that impossible, at least for me.

I saw a couple of people do that meme about quarantine, and I kind of feel like I'm quarantining, more or less, but really I'm not, not entirely. We're "essential," we weren't given a choice, as far as work goes. We are masked all the time at work, and mostly distanced and behind plexiglass, and our department is not open to the public but we're open for university employees and their families. I don't feel unsafe there. We've been reopened for what, over six months now, I'm pretty comfortable with it, on the whole.

We do go out some outside of work, too - not a whole lot, but we have been to movies a few times and we go out to eat once every week or two, to the places that we have found are careful about distancing. We are very careful about wearing masks outside of work, too, although of course you can't wear them to eat. Honestly most people around here are pretty good about it. This may be Texas but we live in the suburbs, it's highly populated and there's a lot of pressure to mask.

Earlier this year, when Rob was working the evening shift and I was working days, I bought the groceries. Normally he buys them. I didn't mind doing it but now that the stores are staying open later, he's gone back to doing it, and honestly I'm happy to let him. If there's someplace people are going to flagrantly go unmasked, it's probably going to be Kroger or Walmart or HEB. And I'm the one with the co-morbidities. (I've lost forty pounds over the last couple of years, though, have I even talked about that? So that helps a good bit, but I'm still overweight and borderline diabetic, etc.)

We were going to go to my sister's for Christmas, she invited us a while back, but we've called it off. It just seems like really bad timing. And I don't mind staying home, to tell you the truth. I don't think my sister and her husband are going out, so it's more that we're a danger to them than that they're a danger to us, and I just don't want to chance that.

Happy 2019!

mellicious: Happy New Year! (new year gif)
Shit, how did it get to be 2019 already? I've mostly been home sick the last few days, although I'm better. I think the only time I've been anywhere since the last time I posted is that we went to Chili's kind of late last night, because somebody gave us a gift-card. I tried being true to my low-fat-low-carb thing (because it's doctor-mandated, mind) and ordered a chicken salad and I didn't really like it. But that was Chili's. I didn't like their vinaigrette and I didn't really like the chicken that much either but I think I would be okay with a salad with chicken at other places. Anyway, it was good to get out. Today I'm still sucking on cough drops and noticing that my nose is horribly chapped, but I'm definitely in recovery mode.

(If I go to Chili's in the future - because Rob gets the urge to go there occasionally - hang the diet, I'm ordering country-fried steak.)

We had a horrible thought. Remember how I said the waitress at the breakfast place we went to might have been the one that infected us? Well, I was thinking that that kind of seemed like a short time window anyway, and then Rob said that he actually thought he got the virus from our co-worker, which sets the whole time-frame for him back about three days, so then I probably got it from him before that, because I was feeling a little better yesterday when my sister said they were both feeling horrible. And then Rob (or I) probably infected them too. That fits the overall timeline who got sick and well in what order a lot more neatly than the IHOP theory. But I decided not to tell my sister about that theory unless she brings it up. Really it's useless wondering about where you got a cold most of the time. (But my brain bounces between subjects all the time - I imagine it going ping! ping! ping! sort of like a pinball - and so I'm always contemplating all sorts of useless things.)

Doctor Who episodes keep taping so I've been watching a lot of those. Let's see, besides the ones I know I already mentioned, I watched "A Christmas Carol" and "Blink" and "Let's Kill Hitler" for chrissake (I don't think I'd seen that one since it first came out) and the most recent one, the Battle of Some Random Name. Tonight I've been watching a bunch of year-end news shows, which mostly were not quite as depressing as you might think. Tomorrow we're going to have another try at "Bumblebee" (and we've already got the tickets so that ups the odds we're actually going this time). And it's at 6:00 so we're going to miss the Doctor Who thing, which is at 7 our time. I already checked and it's set to tape, though, and god knows BBC-A will probably rerun it about a zillion times even if it didn't.

Oh, I almost forgot - we watched "Room" earlier. We had never seen it.  I expected it to be good, and it was. I was really afraid the second half was going to veer off and become a courtroom drama, and I am so glad it didn't!

This ends Holidailies, unless I get my shit together and write another entry before midnight tomorrow - er, tonight, officially. I did maybe 15 journal entries, which is not completely terrible. I think I played out on Music Advent somewhere around Day 15 also. I have consistently written nail journal entries. I have been working on my year-end thing where I decide what my favorite polish of the year is. These will start going up tomorrow - it starts with just the list of everything I've worn, as best I can tell, and I narrow it down from there. The plan is to get my favorite up on Friday. I got down to a tentative top three last night so I think I'll get there.

(Hmm, maybe I'll do a Best Movies post! If I get another post done it'll probably be that.)

Have you ever walked through a door just in time to see another car hit your car? That's what happened to me earlier tonight. Luckily it turned out not to be nearly as bad as it looked. This guy (who I know by sight because he parks by us and apparently gets off work at exactly the same time we do) kind of sideswiped my car - he was trying to back out the wrong way, basically - the spaces are slanted one way and he wanted to go the other way, so he swung wide and my car was in the way. He has a pickup and my car is really low, so he probably couldn't really see my car very well - which doesn't make it any less his fault. Anyway, we opened the door to the parking lot just in time to see it happen. It looked pretty bad. But amazingly, it really did very little damage. Rob said he could see a couple of little fine scratches, but I couldn't see anything wrong. My car is ten years old so a couple of scratches more or less don't worry me. (I just hope it doesn't look a lot worse when I see it in the daylight!) He was very apologetic and I wasn't going to go to the trouble of filing an insurance claim for invisible damage.

I got home and there was a box of nail polish on the doorstep that I'd been feeling guilty about ordering, and I decided that I earned that nail polish (for my trauma, more or less) and I wasn't going to feel guilty about that one any more. It was cheap nail polish, actually, but it's really pretty and amazingly, none of the 12 polishes was broken despite being really really badly packed. (Amazon is notorious among nail polish people for just throwing bottles of nail polish into boxes with inadequate packing materials, and then being shocked when they arrive broken.) This one came with a dozen polishes in a plastic bag stuck into a way-too-large box, with like a couple of little cushiony things thrown in - not enough to make any difference whatsoever. Are they extra-frazzled because it's almost Christmas? The only thing that saved it, I think, is that the plastic bag that the polish was in actually was the right size. (Amazon needs a big button when you order where you can say, "I don't need this til after Christmas, thanks." They do have something like that for some things, but I've wanted it a couple of times in the last week when it was not offered to me.)

We have to work tomorrow, then we're off til after New Year's. Woo! Apparently the students are mostly already gone, because things have been dead the last couple of days. Tomorrow it's going to be even slower, presumably.

I had a doctor's appointment today, and it went okay, but she ordered blood-work because I hadn't had any in a while, and they took about a pint of blood out of me, it looked like. - Ok, well, it was five vials, it probably didn't actually add up to a pint, but still. And my old doctor had retired, and this was the first time I'd seen my new one. I was a little worried about that, but I really liked her, thank goodness. The other one was my age or a little older, and she talked to everybody like they were kindergarteners. It drove me crazy - I think she gave me flashbacks to my mom the elementary school teacher.

Anyway, the day could have gone a lot worse.

The town holiday parade is tonight. We usually go out to eat on Saturday nights, but we went yesterday instead (on the way home from work) because we knew to go out tonight would be a mess. There's no way out of our neighborhood without running into it.

Rob said, "They act like this is the Macy's parade," and I laughed. People who've always lived here are very fond of this parade, it's true. It's just a little dinky parade, but they come out and score their spots on the sidewalk hours ahead. The first year we lived here, we went and watched it, and we enjoyed it, it's really cute - but I haven't had any desire to go again. I think if I had more ties to the people here, that's what would make it different, but I'm kind of a hermit, let's face it.

So we're just staying home tonight. Rob's watching Fury, that Brad Pitt movie about the tank, and I'm half-watching and fiddling around on the computer. (It was near the end when I walked in, or I'm sure I would have gotten more into it. We saw it in the theater and I liked it a lot, although it's pretty depressing.) Tomorrow we think we're going to see "Coco," and Monday we're both off so we thought we might go to the mall and goof around. I don't like to go when it's crowded, but it ought to be alright on a Monday.

I'm going to go see my sister the Monday after that, in San Antonio, and we're going to go over to Austin and go to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. I went once with our mom, years and years ago - I guess when I still lived in Austin, which means it was in the early 80s. I imagine it's changed a bit since then. And I haven't seen my sister in ages, either - I guess we're both kind of hermit-ish. We talk back and forth but hardly ever get around to visiting. So I'm sure I'll have more to say about that later. I'm off work the entire two weeks before and after Christmas, which is going to be kind of weird. I haven't had that much time off all at once in years. (It'll go by like a flash, of course.)

I'll get around to doing the last Music Advent post sometime this week, but one of the videos was "Careless Whisper" and that just makes me sad all over again about all these people dying this week. Then I looked at the phone earlier and there was a breaking news e-mail about Debbie Reynolds being rushed to the hospital, and so it was like, aaand here we go again.

It occurred to me that I didn't mention much about gifts in my last post. As I've said before, Rob and I are terribly pragmatic about gifts. We usually give each other some small surprises but we pretty much pick out the larger gifts so as not to waste money on stuff we don't want. (He gave me some nail things, for the surprise, and I bought him an Ohio State shirt that I had found on Amazon.) We got a couple of nice gifts from my cousins - a pair of those large stainless steel travel mugs (my cousin actually apologized because they were Sam's Club brand and not the name brand, and I said, "Honestly, I don't care at all about that, I like them") and a very pretty wreath that I can put out on my balcony. And my aunt gave us gift cards, as she nearly always does. I gave all the females who are old enough to wear makeup little gift bags full of sample stuff - everybody really seems to like those. I also gave some Star Wars stuff, which of course also goes over well. As for me, my big gifts were my planner - I like Erin Condren's and they are not exactly cheap - and I got a Kindle Fire when they were on sale on Cyber Monday. (I had a regular Kindle - in fact I'm on my 3rd one, I think, but I'd never had the Fire.) (Rob wanted - and went and picked out for himself - a weight vest. To each his own.)

We went to see the Pixar movie Moana this afternoon - I knew it was supposed to be good, and it was - and on the way home we went down this street with a lot of big houses to look at the lights. In particular this one house has a gigantic oak tree in their yard that is completely covered in blue lights. Something about it is just mesmerizing, I love it. Also it always makes me happy when people still have the lights up the week after Christmas. There's something depressing about it when all of the decorations disappear on the 26th. (I do think it's fair game to take stuff down closer to New Year's because I know a lot of people have to go back to work right after the 1st. I don't insist they stay up until Epiphany or anything.)

We are watching one episode of Stranger Things a day. I figured out that this will get us finished on Sunday, just in time for Rob to go back to work on Monday. Some of the episodes have big cliffhangers, though, and sometimes it's really tempting to just keep going. But so far we haven't. (Episode... I mean "Chapter" 4 - they don't call them episodes - is called "The Body" so I think you've gotta say that's a direct Stephen King callout there. I also still think it's very reminiscent at times of early Spielberg - the thing where the lights kept going off and on reminded me a lot of Close Encounters - with a big heaping dose of X-Files and maybe even Twin Peaks. All of those are good things as far as I'm concerned.)

Holidays

I'm off all week - it's not actually holidays for me, technically, because I'm part-time and I don't get paid if I don't work. But we'll manage, financially, and I can't say I'm unhappy about the break.

We went to see my aunt and my cousins yesterday, Christmas Day, and came back today - which is Boxing Day, other places, but nobody calls it that here. It really should be called Returns and Gift Cards Day - although I admit it's not terribly catchy - because that's what an awful lot of people do on the day after Christmas, right? You return what doesn't fit, etc, you maybe buy some Christmas junk that's marked down (I used to do that a lot but I don't as much as I used to), and you spend the gift cards that people gave you, often on newly marked-down merchandise. However, we didn't do any of those things today. We got up (terribly, terribly early, by my standards), we went to my aunt's and had breakfast, and then we came home. Rob went to the gym after we got home; I played Marvel Heroes for a while and then went and took a nap, because I only got maybe 5 hours of sleep last night. And then when I got up we watched another episode of Stranger Things and then the Doctor Who Christmas special, which luckily taped because I set it in some past year and it always remembers. I do love U-verse for that (although we are plotting to get rid of the TV portion of U-verse if we can figure out how to make that work - I'm not really sure it's doable at this point but I'll report back if we make any progress on that).

I guess I should back up and talk about yesterday. Oh, no, actually I'll back up to Saturday night (or very early on Christmas morning, really) right after I posted the previous entry. I did paint my nails - the color is Twinkle Lights, if you want to know. I do really like it but it was a bit difficult to get opaque. Between coats of nail polish, I was messing around on the internet like I always do, and at some point I went back into Marvel Heroes and my inventory panel was suddenly chock-full of stuff. Presumably this was a Christmas gift of sorts from Gazillion (who runs the game), although there were two of everything and Col said today that the rumor yesterday was that the doubling-up was a mistake which they just decided not to try to rectify. It was all these different kinds of gift boxes, and I was determined to sort it out before I went to bed, and I felt like it took for-freaking-ever. There was lots of good stuff in there, so I'm not exactly complaining but it did stress me out for a while there. I did still get to sleep at what for me is a decent hour, because I knew I had to get up by 10 or 10:30, so we could get to my aunt's house in time for a late Christmas lunch.

I had talked to my aunt on Friday and I told her that we were leaving about 11, and she said "but it'll take you three hours!" and I'm not sure where she came up with that number, but we made sure to time ourselves because we were sure she was wrong. We started out the door at 11, actually pulled out at 11:15, and got there at 1:30 even with a brief stop at Buc-ees for a bathroom-and-cold-drinks break. so it takes, what, actually about two hours flat, driving time. (Of course there wasn't all that much traffic, on Christmas Day.) I had told her if they got ready to eat and we weren't there, not to wait, and they didn't. We got there right when they were finishing up. I was trying to decide if it was rude not to get there on time, but since they won't actually ever set a fixed time it's hard to work up much guilt there. There were actually still a couple of people lingering at the table and we just fixed plates and joined them, so it was like Christmas dinner, act 2, more or less.

I'm not going to try to distinguish too much between my various relatives, because there's too many of them, but basically, this group of people is composed of my aunt, who is actually my aunt-by-marriage (my uncle died about 15 years ago), my two first cousins who are in their 40s, their four children (between them), and the family of the oldest of those four children (husband & three little girls). (I always just say "my aunt and my cousins" - obviously some of them are actually first cousins at a remove or two,)  Plus there was my aunt's father, who is 103 and not in particularly good health (although he's hanging in there very stubbornly) and his caregiver. He is still living at home but he broke his hip and now has round-the-clock care as of this past year. (I can't imagine what costs them, but he's pretty well-to-do so I assume he can afford it.) The caregiver just joined right in with everything like she was part of the family. This is all a pretty extended family, I imagine you're getting that from this description if you've read this far, and so it has expanded and contracted to include a variety of people over the years. We usually only see them this one time of the year, but they always seem happy to see us, and it's sort of the last remnant of Christmas that we much participate in.

We normally go on Christmas Eve, stay one night, my aunt ritually complains that we don't stay longer, and we normally go on home late in the afternoon on Christmas Day just the same. This year, since we had to work on the 23rd, we begged off coming until Christmas Day. I enjoyed being home on Christmas Eve, as I said in the last entry, but I'm not sure if the logistics will work out to be able to do that every year. (We'll worry about that starting 11 months or so from now.) Anyway, people came and went, we opened gifts, we watched movies at my aunt's house ("Elf" and "Enchanted") and then Rob & I & a couple of the younger ones went down the street to my cousins' house to spend the night, and we watched more movies ("A New Hope" - which I hadn't actually seen in years, I decided - and part of "Avatar" before we finally collapsed. (To connect around to what I said earlier, I got about 5 hours of sleep, woke up at 6am and never did go back to sleep again. I finally gave up and started setting up my new paper planner that I got as one of my gifts.)

It was a pretty good Christmas, overall.

I was going to write something about "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" - which we saw twice, once the weekend before Thanksgiving and again on Thanksgiving Day - but I can't figure out what to say past "I liked it a lot and so did Rob." This may have more to do with my state of body/mind right now - I feel kinda like crap, honestly - than with anything having to do with the movie. Obviously I'm going to have to come back to that topic later.

Man, I hope I'm not getting sick.

Well, here, I'll throw you a couple of random holiday-related pictures. I found a paper-chain kit at Target last week, in the $1 section, so I bought three of them. They came color-themed so I bought one of each in red, green, and gold, and I alternated them when I put them together. It's not something it ever occurred to me that I needed a kit for before, but now that I have paper-chains draped all across the living room, I think they're pretty brilliant. It was just pre-cut strips of paper and some stickers to hold them together with.
paperchainkit.jpg
It doesn't say how long of a chain you're meant to get, but with three kits' worth, it wraps most of the way around two sides of the living room. I estimated I have something like 18 feet of chain, altogether. Here's part of it:
paperchains.jpg
I just taped it up and so far it's holding fine. I think it's kind of awesome, really.

(I'm all into creative use of tape, lately. Late one night I used most of a roll of flashy purple mylar tape decorating the edge of my computer monitor, and you can also part of see the results of that in this picture.)

Thus far the only outside decoration I've put up is my big silver wreath on the balcony door. I'm sure I'll get around to doing some more of that later.
