So, with all the talk about LJ downsizing, should we all figure out a place to meet when it tanks completely?

Oh man.

If you really want Ike overload, somebody on the [livejournal.com profile] houstontx  community linked to this mashup site: http://flhurricane.com/ikecoverage.html. The four main Houston stations, the NWS and Weather underground all on one page.

If we're lucky, the hurricane will go a little east of Galveston and we'll get the weak side, by a bit. I don't think we can expect it to miss by much more than that. We are probably going to have a very soggy apartment.

Lest somebody think I'm striking today, I'm not. I just have nothing in particular to say at the moment.

(Just wanted to make that clear.)

mellicious: pink manicure (buffy quote - jailbait)
As other people have already pointed out, Livejournal has a new and rather annoying feature: a sort of NetNanny-ish flagging business for adult content. (See here.) Rather than worry about what is or isn't PG-13 enough, I just marked the whole thing "adult concepts" (which is different from "explicit adult content" - which I rarely really have). So if you haven't gone in and changed your settings, you may have already gotten a warning about this entry. The default there is "moderate filtering" - hmm, maybe it wouldn't flag this one after all. I dunno. This is all giving me a headache.

I will have to do some sort of little blurb in the morning before I leave for Austin to complete my month of entries. Or maybe I'll just do another one after midnight! Since I'm not working tomorrow I can stay up, right? I do have to leave early-ish for the airport but not that early.

I am going to overdose on socializing this weekend, mildly hermitlike person that I am. I have already had a rather tedious lunch with some other admin types today, and a happy hour with my co-workers (much less tedious). Then coming up, I have my sister tomorrow and dinner with[profile] anjea Saturday - which of course shouldn't be tedious at all! (My sister is not exactly what I'd call tedious, but she will talk you to death. Exhausting, that might be more the proper word.)

The last entry is all wonky, but trying to fix it just seems to make it worse and it is more or less readable as it is, so I have given up. (If you're wondering, "columbina" is behind the cut, but it's actually the first word of the paragraph after the cut.) The whole last two paragraphs were really meant to be under the cut, since I always figure anybody who wants to know about GuildWars will follow the cut and anybody who's bored by it probably isn't going to read no matter what. But you guys are smart and I have faith that you will figure it out!
mellicious: pink manicure (PotC3 Sparrow)
I hate not having internet access.... And there's that whole GuildWars question, too.

I love Livejournal. I really do. I mean, how else would I ever keep up with you people? But Livejournal does not always make itself easy to love. Like, when you actually want to use some of their features? Well, it's not exactly intuitive, and the Help is not always so helpful. I spent a good little chunk of the morning trying to figure out how to filter my friendslist. All I wanted to be able to do was filter out all of the newsgroups and things when I'm in a hurry. And now I have it done, and yay! but my god, getting there was not easy. (I finally found this page after I got done - if you click on "read more" and scroll down some, it pretty much tells you what I wanted to know. But like I said, I only found that after I did it.)

(I started to just ask you guys instead. It might've been easier. But no, I had to go & try to figure it out myself.)

Isn't it interesting how conservatives are all hot to limit awards on lawsuits until it's their house we're talking about?

This piece goes on for way too long about how all Buddhists aren't really so peaceable, but otherwise makes some good points. Did you know that there were two Buddhists in this Congress? I never heard a word about that, myself. No, all you heard about was Keith Ellison and his Koran. (I thought using Thomas Jefferson's Koran was very clever politically, though, as well as just being cool. It sure shut some people up, didn't it?)

My cough is finally mostly gone, but my boss is sitting behind me coughing away. (This stuff has just been going round and round at work.) It makes my throat tickle just to listen to her.

(Livejournal does seem to have its Autosave feature back, at least. It's the small things.)

I love this cartoon.

I am interested in the fact that the Houston Chronicle's Galveston beat reporter was reassigned, but I'm bothering to put it here because of this bit at the bottom about why Moran is being reassigned: “It’s more about expanding what we do online. We wanted a veteran reporter to anchor our early morning online shift.” First of all, I didn't realize that online coverage had gotten to the point where veteran reporters were assigned exclusively to online coverage at all, and second, I'm interested in what "expanding what we do online" might mean, exactly. (Also, notice that that piece is not from the Chronicle itself at all, but from the Galveston paper. It's only front-page news in Galveston, you see.)

(And hmm, the Astros may be getting a pitcher. That's interesting, too.)

mellicious: pink manicure (Halloween - corpse bride)
I am home sick. I had a random stomach ailment which kept me up a good portion of the night, and I slept all morning and still feel wiped out. I keep going to lay down for a while but I don't seem able to sleep any more, and not much interested in reading, either. So, I try to sleep a while, try to read a while, play Guild Wars for a while (I have a ranger in pre-searing who I'm probably going to delete when I get tired of that), read LJ for a while, etc.

Random stuff from my unplanned day off:

Existential flame war (aka [info]efw) is mostly a very inactive community, but it's frequently very funny when it gets going, and this is hilarious. Something about it seems to have really inspired the commenters to new heights of silliness.

I bought the Winona Ryder version of Little Women at Wal-Mart yesterday for the princely sum of $5.50. There was a whole big display hidden back between the electronics and automotive sections - I need to remember to go check it out again, because there were some other pretty good movies in there. I hadn't watched that movie in a long time, but I've always liked it, and really, I hadn't seen Winona Ryder in anything at all in so long that I'd forgotten how much I liked her. I know she's been around some recently; I wonder if she's going to be allowed to come out of the purgatory she went into after all of that shoplifting to-do. Really, it's about time, isn't it? I mean, yeah, she did something illegal and grossly stupid, but she's hardly the first star to do that. I'm not at all clear on why her career has suffered so much more than, say, Robert Downey's. I'm wondering if it's an image thing - that is, because she's young and female she's not given as much leeway.

Does it seem to anybody else that the Christmas advertising is starting way too early? I probably say this every year, but for goodness sake, it's not even Halloween! I am just not ready for Christmas mode quite yet.

Oh, this TxtLJ thing is going to be trouble - I already bought extra messages (notifications, I guess that's what they are) - I figured out how to check my friendslist and everything. You don't have to pay for the messages you send, what you have to pay for is the ones you receive - like you can say "read (whoever)" and it sends you that person's most recent post. You get 10 free for... having a paid account, I think? - and another 10 for registering for TxtLJ in October, but I figured if I'm sitting around bored next week I could use all those up easy, assuming I'm reading my friendslist via textmessage. So I bought 100 more, just to be safe. They roll over, anyway, and normally I would think that many would last me a good while. But on vacation, you never know.

(I think I have internet separation-anxiety, and Livejournal is totally being an enabler with this text-message business.)

I am posting from my cell phone, let's see if it works!

Hmm, they're replacing the Trinity River Bridge. I've had nightmares about that bridge. (You can't tell from that picture how steep the thing is. It's truly scary.)

I wrote an entry over the weekend on how to add a feed - I was originally wanting to do this for purposes of tracking my congressman's votes, but I also ended up adding a feed for [profile] celluloid_eyes, among other things. Anyway, I originally had the entry marked as private because it wasn't finished, and when I did make it accessible it seems to have sort of gotten lost in the shuffle. So if you're interested, it's here. (If anybody found it without following the link, I'll be shocked. *I* couldn't even find it without looking on my Recent Entries page.)

I had a flu shot this morning. Ow. But it makes me feel terribly virtuous, somehow.

I got about 4 hours of sleep last night so I'm increasingly cranky today. Went to bed at 12, woke up 4-ish, never did really go back to sleep. I finally gave up about 5:45 or so and got up. God, I hate that. (I did get Rob's savings account all nicely up-to-date & balanced in MSMoney, for the first time in a year or so!)

Now I'm thinking about bridges. I actually think my bridge nightmares usually conflate a number of really tall bridges, especially all of that bunch on I-10 between Houston and New Orleans - the ones over the Trinity and the Sabine and the ones in Lake Charles and Baton Rouge, in particular. Also the one on Loop 360 in Austin, which isn't even tall, but something about that bridge is sort of creepy to me.
mellicious: pink manicure (Dr Who - delete)
Today is the 40th birthday of Star Trek, apparently. I knew it was coming up - it was hard to miss, really, with all the Star Trek special things floating around - but I hadn't taken in what day was the official day. The scary thing is that I may have actually watched the premiere. At least, it was likely to have been on at my house, although I was six at the time and probably wasn't paying too much attention. By the time it went off the air, I was nine and a confirmed fan.

My new style is acting wacky on me - or maybe everybody's friendslists are, except that you'd think if it was that somebody else would've complained by now. Anyway, sometime yesterday, scrollboxes started appearing on each individual entry that was more than a few lines long. If it's supposed to be an "improvement" I don't like it. I looks very cluttered. I guess I could try changing my style again and see if that fixes it. Or I could be lazy and see if it fixes itself - that's more my usual style. Heh.

I am not at the annual quilt retreat this weekend, for the first time in eight years or so. In a way I wish I was there and then again, not so much. It's a big hassle, for one thing - you have to take so much stuff! - and I really wasn't wanting to expend the vacation days or the cash, either one, and then there's the whole Mom Problem. We just couldn't figure out how to make the logistics work out too well for her to go - so it's all for the best, I guess, that I didn't really want to go too bad anyway! My aunt Linda did go, and she was sort of pissed that we weren't going, really, but I know her and I know she will be fine. (She talks to everybody, quite frankly, whether she knows them or not. So while I'm sure she will miss us, it's not like she won't have anybody to talk to.)

Huh. Ellen DeGeneres will be hosting next year's Oscars. I like her, so that's fine with me. I didn't really expect Jon Stewart to be back, somehow. (Also, do they usually announce that this early?)

From J-list's newsletter: Did you know that when two Japanese people say the same thing at the same time, they don't say "Jinx" - they say "Happy ice cream!"?? I have to admit that I did not know that. (J-list's newsletter sort of annoys me, because it's always excessively long - but I stay on the list just to read the little tidbits about Japanese culture that are always at the beginning. I rarely ever get down as far as the part that talks about what they're actually selling.)

Hmm, that's enough odds & ends for the moment.
mellicious: pink manicure (buffy quote - ep 1 bored)
(I wrote this about a week ago and never posted it; now seems as good a time as any.)

Did you know that you can look at a page like a friendslist, but it's actually the friends of your friends? I didn't.

Also, I've gotten interested in visual journals, so I need to remember this link. Partly I got interested in that because of moderngypsy's "Artscouts" (the journal piece of which is here) - but I also think I am going to need inspiration for the Day of the Dead quilt, which I am still blundering around in the dark about, to some extent. I have a vague idea about what I'm going to do but I still need the specifics. And I need to start making notes and collecting motifs, and so forth, and this sounds like a good way to do it.
mellicious: pink manicure (Buffy quote: don't get killed)
Does anybody else have trouble with the text entry box on the Update Journal page getting wider and wider as you write, until it's way wider than the screen? It's very annoying.

(I was trying to write an actual entry but I am cranky and it doesn't seem to be happening. Maybe later.)
mellicious: pink manicure (baseball - Kissimmee)
Ooh, I have 101 icons, and room for more! I just got up to 100 for the first time last week, so the extra ones are very timely. And I renewed my paid account this morning, whereupon I got two more! (You get one for every 3 months, right? So I guess that's the two for the extra six months I just paid for.) I am very attached to my icons, for some reason. I was having a terribly hard time deciding what to delete. There were a few obvious candidates (like the seasonal ones, which I can just upload again next year, after all) but after that I was sort of stymied. I also changed my style while I was at it, which most of you will not notice.

(Is the presence of a baseball-player silhouette enough of a clue for non-baseball people to figure out what the Kissimmee icon is about? It's not that I am promoting Florida in general, it's just a spring training thing. Kissimmee is where the Astros are right now.)

I just got spam allegedly from the IRS, saying I had gotten a tax refund, and just click on this link to re-submit so that I can get my money. Are there really people stupid enough to fall for this? There probably are, and that's pretty sad.

I left my flash drive at home, and I may have to go home at lunch and get it, partly just because it's worrying me. That thing's so tiny I always worry that I will lose it. (I have a habit of popping it off of the keychain when I'm using it so the keys won't be in the way, and I should probably stop doing that.) Also I was going to download the new (that is, new-new, as opposed to the new version from a couple of weeks ago) version of Dofus which came out yesterday, because I was unsuccessful at getting it to download at home last night. It would get to about 15% and stop, every time.

It's spring break here, which means horrid traffic. The weather hasn't really been all that great, so you would think people would give up and go home, but noooo. Stupid teenagers. (Disclaimer: any teenagers reading this, of course I don't mean you. After all, if you were in Galveston clogging up traffic, you probably wouldn't be reading this!) The weather keeps changing, which means I have been sickly all week, in a minor way. But I would rather be sickly and have the cooler weather. It's too early for it to get hot.
mellicious: pink manicure (Buffy quote: bored ep 1)
It's very late, and I'm not coherent enough to really try to say anything. but I just wanted to show off my new Buffy quote icons. There are a bunch of them, but I suspect that this one is going to be a favorite. (Don't believe me? just ask Col how often I tell him I'm bored.
mellicious: pink manicure (Valentined)
Regarding the icon, I forgot to say earlier that I saved it from last year, but as far as I recall, you were supposed to spam people's comments with it. (You know, as in, "You've been Valentined!") This is the kind of silly crap that amuses me on Valentine's Day, so if you feel so inclined, spam away!

(Icon from the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda, I believe.)

(Edited to add that it was indeed Cleolinda, as she posted about it at practically the same moment, and added new icons, to boot!)
mellicious: pink manicure (Default)
Also... if you would like to see Rob finish the marathon, go [to this abclocal link that no longer works] and put in his name in the middle box, and then click on the link that comes up. (It's Windows Media, unfortunately.) He doesn't show up for a few seconds after the clip starts - he's the guy with red shorts on and no shirt. You can clearly see the hitch in his gait every other step. That's the hamstring thing. (But hey! 2:59 and change is still nothing to sneeze at!)
mellicious: pink manicure (Potter thing)
If you know places where there are treasure troves of icons, please tell me, because I paid for extra icon space and I have no icons to put there! Terribly important in the grand scheme of things isn't it? I am obsessed with having the right icon for every occasion. It's like jewelry for your Livejournal.

(If you don't find me cool icons I will use this flashing thing constantly and drive you all mad!! Mad, I tell you!)
