I went through my LJ and racked my brain for any movies that were missing and I came up with exactly a dozen movies that I saw in 2008. (Oh, no, it's 13; I forgot Wall-E.) I may be missing a couple, still, but in any case, this is way, way less than I see most years.

In chronological order, more or less:
Sweeney Todd
Cloverfield
There Will Be Blood
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Ironman
Wall-E
The Hulk
The Dark Knight
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Bolt
Slumdog Millionaire
FrostNixon

I think normally I see more like 20-25 movies - around one every couple of weeks, sometimes more. But this year there just wasn't that much I wanted to see. Of course there was the month I spent evacuated, but even then I could have gone to a movie or two if I had really wanted to. I guess it was mostly the aftermath of the writers' strike that made this an extraordinarily bad movie year - and of course the fact that Hollywood is Out of Ideas, as we all know. (Actually I think there's plenty of ideas floating around - it's just that mainstream movies are so damn expensive that everybody's afraid to take chances with them.)

My original idea was to make something like a top 10 list, but that would be ridiculous when I only saw 13 movies. Every one of these is a pretty good movie, in any case - another reason the number is small is because I have gotten really picky about what I go see in the first place. Honestly, I think the cream of the crop is the last two, Slumdog and FrostNixon. Sweeney Todd and There Will Be Blood are both multiple Oscar winners, I believe, but I really wouldn't say either of them are as good. In fact, when it comes right down to it, I didn't like There Will Be Blood. It's a well-made move, the acting is really spectacular, and I'm not sorry I saw it, but it's just too damn depressing. It's a hard movie to like. (I did like Sweeney Todd, quite a lot, and I need to watch it again.) The least of them is probably the Indiana Jones movie, which was a huge piece of silliness - but watchable. Cloverfield is pretty silly, too, but at least it was doing something sort of new. The Dark Knight - y'know, it wasn't a really likeable movie either. If it wasn't for that incendiary, dark performance of Heath Ledger's, it wouldn't be anything extraordinary. Wall-E - well, I hate to say it but I think it's a tiny bit overrated. The beginning is amazing but the part on the ship is not as good (although it's very funny). That's not to say I didn't like it, overall - I definitely did - but that I'm just not sure it quite lives up to its hype. I got it for Christmas and I have yet to watch it again; I'll report back if that changes my mind to any great extent.

Let's see... I liked Ironman and Zack & Miri a lot - both of them stand out in their (very different) ways but neither one of them qualifies as really top-tier, to my mind. The Spiderwick Chronicles was an above-average kids' movie that seemed to be ignored, for the most part; Bolt did better financially, I believe, and was maybe a better movie but still pretty fluffy. And The Hulk was actually pretty good, to my surprise.

So, Slumdog Millionaire and FrostNixon are my top two, definitely. I'm uncertain which one is better, but go see them both, if you haven't already.
