You're right, he didn't hate it. At least, not all of it. He loved the interplay with Luke, Rey and Kilo Ren. We had quite a discussion about why he was so negative. For one thing, he thought the casino was totally wrong. It didn't belong in the Star Wars universe, it belonged in Las Vegas. In fact, he didn't think Po and Rose should have gone there at all. He was put off by Po's hotdogging, which I pointed out was pretty much the same as Han Solo, in his day. Sean just thought there was entirely too much failure on the part of the Resistance. No matter what they tried, it went sour for one reason or another.
We decided it's just that I'm more episodic in my viewing. Each movie stands alone for me. I don't need it to be part of "the universe." I see Rian Johnson as trying to move on from the original Star Wars base, with new characters and plots. I'm not as immersed in the canon.
When I saw the very last scene, I thought it was totally unnecessary. I was sure the movie ended with the previous scene. When those kids showed up I thought, this thing is never going to end. I had missed the broom flying into the child's hand, which pretty much made the whole scene sensible. It was really the key to the whole movie, and I had blinked at the wrong time. We'll see how it goes the second time around.
