One of the things I talked to the vet about when I took Biggie in, was removing all his medication. The stuff he was taking for his bladder issues turns out wasn't working anyway so that was a no brainer. That's why he has the new food. But the other pill is one to calm him down so he won't get all anxious and eat random crap. The vet wasn't wild about stopping this but said we could try other things. She said to give him the pill every other day for a couple of weeks and then every third day, etc. So that's what I've been doing.

Now the logical, scientific part of my brain says that it will take weeks to see the effects of this.

But, my Biggie part of my brain says whoa, Nellie. Bad idea. Yesterday, he was just bouncing off the walls. He was pulling at the yarn bins, picking on Julio, opening drawers that I didn't even know he could open, knocking shit off of everywhere and pestering the life out of me. I thought, hmmmm I'm supposed to be looking for lethargy. Wonder where I could get some! And then, DOH!! his pills. So I gave him one last night and we go back to every morning today. The vet will be happy.

He did wind down for a little bit last night but when he did, it was on top of my yarn. Then Julio joined him. It was cute but really inconvenient, knitting wize.

Today I have no required people transactions that I know about which is lovely. I'm kind of over peopled at the moment.

I think I'll go swim some laps and then come home to a lovely quiet day of no people and two, hopefully, calm cats.

I don't have a Substack specifically for fiction set in Muna. I might start one, I don't know. It seems like a bad idea to mix the two worlds, even if they're kind of similar. So here's a wintery Muna story. Put your warm socks on, we're going hiking in the worst possible conditions.

NMIXX released a video containing both a holiday version of "Blue Valentine" (the same tune and lyrics, but with holiday-style backing music) and a rerecording of "Funky Glitter Christmas." Enjoy!

A couple of fun things to watch for:

  1. At about 1:38, Sullyoon comes out of a doll box, which is fun because people often say Sullyoon looks like a doll.
  2. At about 1:45, the toys have Lily tied to the floor, a la Gulliver's Travels.

It's only eight, right?

Tonight in the basement of the Harvard Book Store where the part of the HVAC which replaced the original location of mysteries and crime makes enough industrial noise for me to wear earplugs while browsing, I gestured a choice of directions at a T-junction of shelves to a woman laden with bags in both hands who responded in an immediate tone of cheerful accusation, "You're half a man," and then before I could say anything and see which way she reacted, "Half and half. Cream. I'm just kidding," on which she turned around and left the way she came. Happy Saturday before Christmas?

Woke up at 7 AM. Oliver wants food. Fed us all. Nap time.

Had a nice nap. Overslept a little. I’m trying to wake up to get my clothes in the dryer. Oliver is fussing over me, purring. You were fed this morning. No, you’re not getting more food.

Looked at the Chicago Red Line maps. I need to write down the stops before my stops so that I know when to get ready to get off.

I really want to go back to sleep, but I can’t because I need to go to the post office. Maybe I could nap for a half hour while my clothes dry.

Gracie is barking at Oliver. A quiet morning at home.

Hmm. The Mattis post office is open until 5 PM. I’m thinking of going back to sleep for an hour. Or maybe I’ll stay awake and just sit for a while. The dogs are barking loudly. Maybe I’ll stop at Staples and pick up some printer ink. I’m having some shipped to me, but it’s delayed. And I need to go to Walmart.

Cat (Oliver) in my face. He is not shy about getting attention. Lily tends to go off on her own except when she wants food.

No, I’m going back to bed. Oooh, I’m dizzy. I’ll stop at the (closed) post office later to mail letters. Then I’ll go to Walmart. Slept well until Gracie started pushing me off the bed.

Solstice. I had the lights on at 4:30.

The dogs are outside. I’ll feed them and myself and then shower. Got my hat and gloves and a necklace. I’m waiting anxiously for rings. Oh, that reminds me that I need to stop the mail for when I’m gone.

Maybe I’ll submit a Walmart order for tomorrow. I could mail the cards then too; they won’t get there any faster. And I’ll stay home.

Gracie got my new glasses. The dogs are holy terrors. Got them back. Gracie was like, Oh, you’re upset. Yeaaaaah, I am!

Fed us all. Started reading the book about the making of The Princess Bride. It’s interesting.

Got a recycling bin into the hallway to the basement. I kind of want to go back to sleep, but it’s too early. I’m feeling too tired to do much though. I could submit my Walmart order. I should do some packing. Maybe I’ll post.

Ordered stuff from Walmart, including a wireless trackball to use with my new travel laptop. I should go to sleep early and get up early because I'll have to get up at the crack of dawn on Tuesday to drop the pets off. But I'll go pack some stuff.

Earlier in the week, I thought Biggie was in trouble again. But, I think now, that was stress about nothing. As I type this, he and Julio are playing hide and seek which keeps turning into I'll Get You My Pretty!! And then goes back to hide and seek. Julio is hiding under the bed and Biggie just found him.

I'm tired of Christmas shit and I'm letting it get to me and that's just not acceptable.

Volleyball started out perilously. The two problem players positioned themselves in a way to ruin it for the most of us BUT then, they both played well with no crap. So go figure. It was fun even though two of my favorite players weren't there.

Elbow Coffee was pretty dreadful. BUT I had my knitting and I just kept my mouth shut. And eventually it ended. I need to invent a device that sounds an alarm once an old person has told the same story 10 times. I'd have it embedded in the building.

Bonny and I have a puzzle date at 1 pm. We keep going out there to puzzle at different times and missing each other so we set a time today.

Ooops my chicken wings for lunch are done.

More later.

Best Wrong Answer time

Time for my seasonal round-up of best wrong answers from LearnedLeague.  (We get to vote at the end of the season.). The background shading doesn't mean anything---it's just from the every-other-line-shadedness of the list I'm copying from.

First, my honorable mentions:

A complex at 1820 E. Thomas St. in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood serves as the central setting of what 1992 film and grunge-era Gen X classic?
RAINSPOTTING

Imbrium, Serenitatis, Nectaris, Nubium, Tranquillitatis, and Humorum are all names of what?
SEVERE PLAQUE PSIORASIS MEDICATIONS

The name of the highest peak in suburban Atlanta is notable in its relation to the name of Major League Baseball's controversial first Commissioner. What is that peak's name?
MOUNT EXPLICIT WRITTEN PERMISSION  (really should be "EXPRESS", but haha anyway)

What term for a formal assembly of representatives, derived from a Medieval Latin word and used for a 1521 gathering in an imperial free city on the Upper Rhine near Frankfurt, is (per that Latin word's literal definition) intended to describe a meeting lasting only one day?
MEETING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A TOWN CRIER MESSAGE

The Delian League, a voluntary alliance named for its island base and with upwards of 300 members at its peak, eventually evolved into the beginnings of what empire?
800-588-2300 EMPIRE

What town on the River Thames in England, home to the Royal Regatta, lent its name to the collarless shirt with a short buttoned placket that provided ideal ventilation for rowers? Today it's a menswear staple as a casual T-shirt alternative, undershirt, or layering piece.
QUARTERZIP-UPON-THAMES

My two runners-up:

3. Robert Graves's 1934 historical novel explores the drama of political scheming and the workings of imperial power in 1st-century Rome during the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, and Caligula, as told by whom?
ROBERT GRAVES, PRESUMABLY

2. Iowa is the sophomore studio album, and also the birthplace, of what large heavy metal band, famous for its chaotic live shows and distinctive image, in which members wear matching jumpsuits and individual masks and are identified by number?
BRING IN DES MOINES, BRING IN DES FUNK

And my vote for Best Wrong Answer:

1. What carmaker, whose eponymous founder was born under the zodiac sign Taurus, has named many of its models after famous fighting bulls, including Murciélago, Aventador, Diablo, and Huracán?
CHEVR-OLÉ!

This is the year-end category where I'm least likely to want to change my answers in the next week and a half, lol, so here we go.

Favorite new songs/albums of the year
- Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 by Lord Huron. Great vibes, a great progression, only one skip (“Digging Up the Past”). Dreamy and sad, suffused with existential horror, just weird enough both lyrically and musically. I wasn’t sure what I wanted from the new album, but this was exactly it. “Who Laughs Last” is probably my song of the year.

- Mayhem by Lady Gaga. When you're sixteen years into your career and can make a banger album like that this fits right in with your classics!!! The first six or seven songs in particular are an amazing run. “Perfect Celebrity” is probably my favorite, but it’s hard to choose.

- All the live tracks from the Oasis tour. I think this is the first officially released live version of Bring It On Down ever, and Wonderwall is the best live version since… idk, the one from Knebworth 1996 maybe? Or maybe ever? And this live version of Slide Away has finally brought me around on that song. Incredible stuff. (Full live tour album when???)

- "Van Horn" by Saint Motel. One of those songs I didn't really appreciate until I heard it live. Great fun. Also a couple of songs off their new album from the spring (as opposed to their new album for the fall).

- New Candys, which I stumbled across on Bandcamp. I got hooked on their single "Regicide", and the accompanying album The Uncanny Extravaganza is ideal "drowning out external noise" work music.

- All That We Imagine Is the Light, the new Garbage album. Some of the writing is a little dodgy, honestly, but the vibe is great. No Gods No Masters is still my favorite, though.

Disappointments
- I wish I liked Miley's new album more than I do. The tracks I like best are mostly her doing Lady Gaga, and that's not really what I go to Miley for.

- I discovered Dorothy Martin of the band Dorothy has gone full born-again Christian and is now giving interviews about spiritual warfare and the like. Bummer. We'll always have ROCKISDEAD, I guess.

Favorite new-to-me songs/albums
- This year I got really into the Monnow Valley and Sawmills versions of Definitely Maybe, which were released for the 30th anniversary last year. In some ways I like them better than the official album, or at least they've made me appreciate the official album more. Sad Song with young Liam on vocals is incredible, and I’m sad the official version left out that great electric guitar (bass?) hook.

- At the beginning of the year I had a month or so of listening almost exclusively to Doechii (mostly Alligator Bites Never Heal) and GloRilla (mostly Glorious and Anyways, Life's Great). Good times. TGIF is an all-timer.

Stuff I was really into for a hot minute and/or that I want to explore further
- Chat Pile and Hayden Pedigo through their collab album In the Earth Again. I love the contrast of the menacing electric guitars and Pedigo's contemplative, melancholy acoustic.

- Ethel Cain, maybe? Or maybe I just like “Tempest” a lot.

- The singles from Charli XCX’s upcoming Wuthering Heights-themed album. Brat didn’t do anything for me, but these are very much my jam. I love when a pop artist goes weird, like she does on “House.” My most anticipated release of 2026.

- That new Rosalia album. I think I need to spend more time with it to fully appreciate it. “Berghain” is a hell of a track, though.

- Jonah Kagen, mostly that single “God Needs the Devil,” which is exactly the kind of rootsy bitterness I like sometimes. However, his full album later in the year gave me bad politics vibes, always a hazard with Americana and country artists, so I don’t know that I’ll explore him further.

Some other favorite tracks from this year
“Problems” by Yonaka. That last bit leading into the chorus for the first time!! Gives me shivers.
“The Fate of Ophelia” by Taylor Swift. This song is NONSENSE but it’s so catchy.
“Lucky” by Renee Rapp from the Now You See Me 3 soundtrack. A classic bop. Apparently it didn’t even chart, which surprises me, but the charts were wacky this year.
“Song for Henry” by Loren Kramer from the soundtrack for On Swift Horses. You know, the angsty heartbreaker song playing over Julius and Henry’s first sex scene.

Old Favorites - stuff I already loved and continued to listen to a bunch in 2025.
Kendrick Lamar! His Super Bowl show reignited all my enthusiasm. I watched that thing so many times. This coincided with my Doechii/Glorilla phase at the beginning of th eyear.

Miley Cyrus's older stuff, especially her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation. I’d have said Plastic Hearts was the one I really loved, and yet at this point I think I’ve actually listened to ESV more times. I guess maybe it’s the right mood for more situations than Plastic Hearts. It kind of wears down towards the end, and I find the last two songs unlistenable, but until that point it’s a basically flawless execution of the thing it’s choosing to be.

Oasis, lol. They were my top artist of the year yet again. Mostly the Definitely Maybe anniversary release and the live tracks, as mentioned above, but also according to Tidal I listened to the Knebworth 1996 live album a lot. I don’t even remember this.

Best lines - New or old, on their own or combined with the music:
- I got a burning feeling deep inside of me / And don’t know where to put it (“Who Laughs Last” by Lord Huron)

- You said you really don’t dream anymore (“Life is Strange” by Lord Huron)

…I probably just need to do a whole post about this album, huh. Does anyone else here listen to them?

The month has certainly gotten away from me- what do you mean Christmas is in a few days?

Thank you to everyone who has sent cards! I have, embarrassingly, completely lost track of things. ^^;; But I have also sent a lot of things... and would feel good about the state of my gifting overall except I have one amazon order from the beginning of the month that hasn't budged!. I suspect next year I will either need to pester people for wishlists at the beginning of November or see if we can skip the 'zon altogether. (Also a few packages out in the void but that's starting to clear up and that's certainly the weather affecting things at this point.)

I have one more day of work left this year, and then nearly two weeks off. I suppose the main thing I need to do is clean/sort/organize. Yet again, not having any clue what I own threatened to bite me in the ass. (Saved! ...by my laziness. I hadn't actually bought the thing I thought I needed but already had.) So, 2026 will be the year of the whole-place inventory and likely clean-out. Maybe I can just start doing a monthly giveaway post?

Finished up RG Exia and put him in the Mangar. Next is a 30MM Horse, which is part of the D&D party that I ordered at Thanksgiving: RG Justice, HG Calibarn, SD Dynames, 30MF Priest, and 30MM Horse. I didn't order a D&D party on purpose! Just... once everyone was in my cart I was just 'lol, this sure is an assortment, or more like a D&D party...'

Neighbor D's memorial service is also today. It's fairly late in the day, so I'm just going to drop by briefly, but I also wouldn't miss it.

Fic in a Box - my gifts!

I received three fantastic gifts for [community profile] ficinabox - what a bounty! Time got away from me; I've been meaning share this this sooner, but here they finally are:
  1. A wonderful Grimm fic where everyone comes together to shape the future of the Wesen world - I really wish the show had gone in a direction like this, instead of insisting the Wesen world had to keep hidden:
Clock Strikes Midnight (4204 words) [Teen]
    Fandom: Grimm (TV)
    Relationship: Nick Burkhardt/Sean Renard/Juliette Silverton
Characters: Nick Burkhardt, Sean Renard, Juliette Silverton, Rosalee Calvert, Alexander
Content Tags: background Rosalee Calvert/Monroe, Wesen & Grimm & Royals Politics, Plans to make the Wesen world go public, Politics, Worldbuilding, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Voice of Reason Rosalee Calvert

Summary: "Revelation is inevitable. Sooner or later, we will be found out and our secrets dragged out of the shadows and into the light."

At a potluck picnic in the park, Portland's Wesen gather to decide their future—and that of the world.
  2. A delightful Grimm fic in an unconventional format - this one's from a Wesen textbook! I'm so fascinated with all the bits and pieces of history we got over the course of the show, and I love getting more of that!
A Historical Perspective on the Gesetzbuch Ehrenkodex (6082 words) [Teen]
    Fandom: Grimm (TV)
Content Tags: Wesen & Grimm & Royals Politics, In-Universe Textbook, Pre-Canon, In-Universe Documents

Summary: Being the introduction to a textbook on the history of a complex time in the wesen world.
  3. And an amazing gift in a Yuletide-rare fandom where two characters I've been wanting more interaction for get to have a great missing scene together that I wish had happened just like this in canon:
A Private Audience (1265 words) [Teen]
Fandom: Nantucket Trilogy - S.M. Stirling
Relationships: Kashtiliash/Kathryn Hollard, Raupasha & Kashtiliash, Raupasha/Kenneth Hollard
    Characters: Kashtiliash, Raupasha, Kathryn Hollard
Content Tags: Missing Scene, Not Canon Incompliant, Uptimers vs Downtimers, Hollard Family Tropism for Royalty

Summary: Raupasha seeks Kashtiliash's permission this time...

For no apparent reason, I couldn't get to sleep last night. After almost an hour of lying in bed not sleeping I got up and read for an hour or so, but then when I tried to sleep again I lay awake for another long period of time. And then to add insult to injury I woke up about ten minutes before my alarm and couldn't get back to sleep because I needed the bathroom. Ugh. And also my throat was starting to feel sore during the night and when I woke up this morning it was worse. I don't really feel congested (yet) but my throat is still sore and being extra tired isn't helping.

Eden was not well this morning but seems to have recovered now, after a good soak in the bath. My daughter is a big believer in a restorative or calming bath, and her daughters seem to have followed suit. (I generally prefer a shower.)

Violet is having a Christmas party late this afternoon, which she has been planning for months. This morning she was supposed to tidy her room in preparation but her work was very sketchy (in the sense of not thorough). She wasn't very motivated to do a better job because she says they won't be using her room for the party (I hope she's not planning to use the basement…) so I helped her move furniture around so she could vacuum behind and under things.

Apart from that small amount of activity I'm not planning to do much today, hoping that taking it easy will make my sore throat go away.

My coat didn't arrive yesterday and when I checked the LLBean website it now shows "arriving on 22nd December". I suspect there is a lot more stuff than usual being shipped at this time of year which might explain the delay. I was intrigued when I looked at the tracking history to see that the package went from upper New York state down into northern Connecticut and then back north east into Massachusetts. Weird, and doesn't seem very efficient to me.
