Farewell, 2025!

There's an odd duality to 2025 in that, while the year has been a very bad one for my country and for the world in general, it's been kind to me: I adopted my wonderful cat, went from a bad work situation to an excellent one, and moved into a much better apartment. So on a personal level, I'm looking back on the year fondly and hoping for more of the same in 2026, even as I fervently hope the coming year will be dramatically different on the broader scale.

Reading-wise, I was fortunate enough to pick up some real gems this year:

- I've already talked about A Canticle for Leibowitz here: it's a classic for a reason, and I think a good read for these times. Brilliant, moving, dark but never grim.

- Spiderlight, by Adrian Tchaikovsky, was recommended to me by [personal profile] fiona15351, whose taste is, as usual, excellent - this book is exquisite! Fiona described it as “a Last Unicornesque takedown of D&D alignments, with spiders” and noted that “there’s also a fireball-happy wizard.” The last is because she knows what I like - surprising exactly no one, Penthos was in fact my favorite character. One of the things I found structurally interesting about Spiderlight is that this is a book that doesn’t rely at all on surprise. I would go so far as to say nothing that happens is really surprising to the reader (though it definitely is to the characters!). Seeing things coming does not lessen their impact - if anything, it enhances it. I wouldn’t recommend Spiderlight to someone who hasn’t read a lot of fantasy, because much of the appeal lies in how Tchaikovsky plays with familiar tropes; I think at least some familiarity with the genre is required for full effect. But for someone who does have that familiarity, it’s a delight and I can’t recommend it more highly.

- I read Barbara Hambly's Windrose Chronicles books - the duology of The Silent Tower and The Silicon Mage, the sequel Dog Wizard, and Stranger at the Wedding, which isn't strictly speaking in the series but is in the same universe - and was immediately obsessed. I'd been dubious going in - '80s portal fantasy isn't something I'd have generally considered my cup of tea - but I really like a lot of Hambly's other works, so I gave it a try, and I'm so glad I did! This rocketed up the list to become one of my favorite book series ever, immediately. I love the wizard tropes, love the themes Hambly explores here (some of which are familiar from others of her books), and I even - unusually for me - really enjoy the romance between the protagonists, who are two extremely intelligent and pretty strange individuals meeting, perhaps for the first time, someone else who is operating on the same wavelength.

- Better late than never - this year was the first time I read anything by Jane Austen! I read Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion, at Fiona's urging, and definitely preferred the latter. (The yearning! Marvelous!)

- Other highlights included Ann Leckie's Translation State, which was excellent and may be my favorite Leckie yet, and Le Guin's short story collection The Compass Rose, out of which I loved best "The Author of the Acacia Seeds" and "Mazes."

I didn't write much this year - outside of work, at least. I posted two fics, one for the Silmarillion and one for Star Wars, both as part of exchanges and both written before I transferred to my current bureau in mid-May, so to the extent I predicted I might be writing more after the switch, I was wrong; the same goes for being more active here on DW. The day job has just kept me really busy, but it's the good, worthwhile kind of busyness.

So farewell, 2025, with gratitude for the good things you brought. And here's to the new year: May it be kinder than the last.

Привет and welcome to our new Russian friends from LiveJournal! We are happy to offer you a new home. We will not require identification for you to post or comment. We also do not cooperate with Russian government requests for any information about your account unless they go through a United States court first. (And it hasn't happened in 16 years!)

Importing your journal from ЖЖ may be slow. There are a lot of you, with many posts and comments, and we have to limit how fast we download your information from ЖЖ so they don't block us. Please be patient! We have been watching and fixing errors, and we will go back to doing that after the holiday is over.

I am very sorry that we can't translate the site into Russian or offer support in Russian. We are a much, much smaller company than LiveJournal is, and my high school Russian classes were a very long time ago :) But at least we aren't owned by Sberbank!

С Новым Годом, and welcome home!

Thank you also to everyone who's been giving our new neighbors a warm welcome. I love you all ❤️

Theme: Amnesty, Action/Adventure, Old Fandoms, Pre-AO3 Works, Research, Small Fandoms, Underloved Works, Worldbuilding

Summary: The authors(1) didn’t really provide one, so here’s mine: Joe’s old buddy, fighter pilot Captain Rock Masterson, is taken prisoner by air pirates—and darned if Rock isn’t Polly Perkins’ cousin, giving her sound reason to gatecrash the adventure! But little does Pirate King Dantes Blackbeard the Third suspect that his scheme for world conquest is being puppeteered by something even more horrific…

Reccer's Notes: (In which Full Metal Ox betrays an affection for dated media.)Continue. )

Is it Great Literature? Or even necessarily Good Writing? No—but the authors know exactly where in Storyland they’re supposed to be, and I’m the niche audience it’s for; they’ve fried up a tasty sack of potato chips.

Too Much To Do

I hate how far behind I am on everything.

I did get out and run some errands yesterday. I needed to deposit a check at a credit union shared branch. Since that's close to the Oakton post office, I mailed about half of my holiday cards. (I am still working on writing the rest of them.) I also picked up prescription refills. Normally, I just get the refills by mail, but I was concerned that wouldn’t be timely enough with the holiday season.

In the course of attempting to clear a few things off my dining room table today, I discovered that I had missed the due date on my real estate taxes. I’ve now paid them on-line, but I had to add on an annoying fee. It’s my own fault, of course, but I hate that I’ve been so disorganized.

I’m also scouring my email trying to figure out what date I bought a particularly theatre ticket for. It’s not until late March, but I need to avoid creating schedule conflicts. This has prompted me to attempt to clear out a bunch of old email, which is, alas, going to be a lengthy process. (And, no, I haven’t found the theatre ticket yet.)

I still have tomorrow to get things done, at least until early evening when I’m telling a story.

Also, I lucked out and got a readers slot at the Moby Dick Marathon in New Bedford. If you want to hear me, I’ve got 10:15 to 10:20 p.m. on Saturday (January 3rd). The whole marathon is live streamed on YouTube and you can watch it afterwards at your convenience.

Name: King / Megan

Age: 37

I mostly post about: Exchange letters. Real life: parenting, health issues (ex chronic migraines, epilepsy, depression, anxiety, hubby has hardcore depression, my kid has ADHD, my mom had cancer, and my dad has dementia), friendship, family, my cat, and general rl happenings. I'll talk about fandom and writing stuff too.

My hobbies are: Writing fanfiction, adult coloring books, listening/reading to audiobooks

My fandoms are: My main ones right now are Star Wars (primarily Clone Wars and Bad Batch right now) and Star Trek (primarily DS9).

I'm looking to meet people who: Overall, besides the deal breakers I'm open to friending anyone. It's cool to see different lives and views (except below).

My posting schedule tends to be: I'm trying to be better with updates. My plan is to post every Tuesday. Sometimes there will be dear creator letters for exchanges.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:
• Conservatives. I feel bad saying that. I have conservative friends irl but I don't want to see it online if that makes sense.
• If you're a Christian who constantly talks about Christianity I'm not interested. It's fine if you're Christian, but if every conversation you make it about the Bible and Jesus that's annoying to me.
• If you hate people who like Harry Potter and think all fans are transphobic etc. I'm a Hufflepuff so if that bothers you then nope.
• In regards to fanfiction and creating, a deal breaker is if you think that if someone writes about 'X' then they must support 'X' irl.
Damn there's more deal breakers than I thought.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm nonbinary/genderfluid (he/him pronouns but she/her is fine too) and bisexual. I'm open with health stuff (see above for examples). Been married for almost 15 years (refer to him as hubby) and have a 7 year old (refer to her as Huttlet). I'm a geek/nerd/whatever. I post with bullet points/list for my sanity with each point being a different topic. Posts have a gif at the top. Posts are crossposted/imported from livejournal.

What happened when Yuna and Shane were talking.

Reccer's Notes:
I wanted this scene when I watched episode 6, and toomuchplor wrote it! This is what happens between Ilya and David when Shane is outside talking with Yuna. It's also about David observing how in love Shane and Ilya are, and about David and Yuna gradually getting to grips with all the revelations. It's wonderfully written, and just exactly what I'd hoped someone would write. Also, toomuchplor is in the vortex!! *excited noises* (this is plor's 3rd HR fic).

Reccer's Notes: An absolutely gorgeous fic which integrates real-world museum exhibits; they all sounded so unique and fascinating it made me want to visit my own local museum, too!! The slow build up of the boys' relationship is also just delightful as they explore these new worlds and the many other ways the museum's magic animates each unique exhibit.

Summary: Luo Binghe is setting the beginning foundations of his attempt to prove himself the righteous cultivator Shen Qingqiu could welcome back to his side (and possibly love but let's not get ahead of ourselves here) when he hears his master's life is in peril. He leaps at the chance to prove his goodness and worth to his master.

Luo Binghe learns his master is not the man he thought he was.

AKA

Shen 'Airplane wrote this for an orgy wife plot/love confession but I'll be damned before I do anything like THAT' Qingqiu vs Luo 'If it were not for Shizun, I'd kill everyone on this mountain and then myself' Binghe, FIGHT

Reccer's Notes: Out of all the 'Binghe fights the System and finds out Shen Qingqiu's true identity' fics out there (and there will never be enough to satiate my cravings), this one is my favourite. Please don't be turned off by the grammar: this is such a perfect dissection of the many different parts of Shen Qingqiu slash Shen Yuan, following Binghe through a series of important memories as he pieces together the truth and reaches the core of the rift between he and his Shizun. It just feels so perfectly... conclusive: when it ended all I could do is sit back and bask in the satisfaction because it felt like such a perfect ending for them both!!

Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] jaegecko
Theme: Amnesty, Ambiguous Relationships, Backstory, Character Development, Epic Works, Fandom Classics, Getting Back Together, Missing Scenes, Mutual Pining, Politics, Research, Series

Summary: The Turningverse is a series of stories that interweave with both canon "West Wing" episodes and each other. Each one is self-contained, so feel free to begin anywhere you feel moved to do so.

Reccer's Notes: THE big Sam/Josh fic, and it earns all of its accolades! The author is incredibly knowledgeable about the day-to-day realities of political campaigners and White House staffers, flawlessly interspersing their own original scenes with canon. And the central relationship is so perfectly, tragically flawed: two men who are intrinsically drawn to one another, struggling to overcome the lack of privacy inherent to their position, burgeoning resentment, and some of the most heart-breakingly realistic internalised homophobia I've read in a long time. And that's not to mention the fic's version of Lisa, Sam's initial fiance, who becomes a very important character just as flawed and with just as complicated a relationship with Sam and Josh as they have with another. I devoured these fics and never wanted to stop!

However, be aware that the final fic of the series (the intended second-last part) was never fully completed. As a result, the series never reached the point where the couple gets back together for good. I recommend ending with 'Interlude for two voices' if you can't bear that; I sure stayed there for a while until I could bring myself to go on! :')

A few random things:

1) My sleep cycle has gotten really screwed up. What I need to do is just go back to bed when I wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning, instead of doing puzzles or reading.

2) I saw Song Sung Blue this morning, with my friend, Cindy. I ran into a couple of people from my chavurah, who were sitting in the row in front of us. We got lunch afterwords at the Chinese restaurant in the same shopping center. As did they.

3) I managed to call into tonight’s zoom meeting for Community Storytellers. I told my story about things I learned from my father.

4) If you are writing a book and want to irritate me, have an otherwise intelligent male character tell someone that he had an identical twin sister.

5) Ridiculous thought of the day: I want a tutti-frutti hat, a la Carmen Miranda.
