I guess I never did post a wedding photo here, even though I wrote about it on my anniversary. But now I have the good scanner and you are probably going to get sick of pictures of me and Rob. So here we are at the reception, in my parents' back yard in the back of beyond (San Leon, Texas, to be exact) - which was exactly where we wanted to be. We wanted a nice laid-back wedding and I think we got it.

You look beautiful! I love that you went for the big, old-fashioned dress. That's the ONLY way to go. I see these things now where girls are getting married in these plain, white dresses that almost look like something they could wear any day of the week. I'm like, "Are you NUTS? This is your big chance to dress up like a princess, and you look like you're going to get your taxes done!"

Well, this was 20 years ago, remember - the whole sleeveless-dress craze hadn't hit yet. I wouldn't have wanted to wear one anyway, but by all accounts it's impossible to find a dress with sleeves these days. But that said, yeah, I did want something old-fashioned. I think "Victorian ball gown" was the term I was throwing around at the time.

A couple of years ago I actually interviewed a wedding planner for an article, and we got into a weird argument about modern wedding dress design. I was supposed to just be some regular guy, and I think she was a little puzzled by why I had such strong opinions on how boring modern wedding dresses have gotten. But she was really sneery and dismissive about old-fashioned gowns. I remember her saying, "Those things make you look like you should be on top of the cake!" I was like, "And that's a PROBLEM?"

Well, I've seen some that go entirely too far - puffed sleeves literally the size of basketballs, butt-ugly stuff like that. But there's a nice middle ground in there. And I think it's sort of vaguely sad that sleeveless seems to have become practically mandatory, like admitting you want sleeves means something is wrong with you. (I think it's a fat issue, if we're being very honest about it. Admitting to wanting sleeves means you must be fat. The horror.)
