Somebody who shall be nameless bought me World of Warcraft for my birthday. Since it hasn't arrived yet (or actually I think it may well be sitting in the office at my apartments), I have had to content myself with reading: there's a newbie area on the WoWWiki, for instance. WoW Rookie (which is part of a site called WoWInsider) is also interesting. Not that I didn't know this, but it keeps striking me anew every time I find more WoW sites: this game is SO much bigger than GW. Meaning, more players, more sites, more add-ons, just more of everything. It's kind of overwhelming.

(I suspect that I will be spending my evening installing patches. I hear tell there's quite a lot of them.)

I know that it totally is overwhelming BUT the first time you walk in the door, there is a really good in-game tutorial (at least I thought it was very good) that introduces things one at a time.

Definitely, don't hesitate to ask questions! Hee hee.

Somebody offered me a whole set of low-level chain mail and I was like, "Can I even wear chain mail? How do I know?" I was lost. (And then it took me a while to figure out how to equip it.) But I am figuring it out. I got through the noob area ok, anyway.

(I made a human paladin, to start with. Col said paladins were considered "easy mode" and I figured that's just what I need at this point.)

I said SOME people consider pallys easy mode. Personally I think hunter is the easiest character for going it alone, all told. Paladin is simple to start with - whomp, heal, repeat - but gets harder to sustain (as opposed to rogue, which starts out tricky and gets uber as you learn more sneaky tricks).

Anyway, if we team up a lot you won't have to worry as much about which classes are hardest/easiest to play solo, right?

OK, fine, you did say some. (Picky.) The point is, at that point I wanted easy.

(I still want to be a gnome. Maybe I will try a rogue, for that.)

Also, I kinda don't get why night-elves are supposed to be sexy.

Incidentally, the patches were not as bad as I feared. I read the front of the manual which said to install WoW and then immediately install Burning Crusade, and then patch, and for some reason that cut down on the patching - quite a lot, compared to what Col was saying about his experience. I guess maybe some of the patching that you would otherwise have to do is included in the Burning Crusade install?

That'd be my guess, just because it would have been based on a later version of the WoW code.
