Date: 2009-03-31 02:23 pm (UTC)Kidding aside, it's straight Latin. Pneu- as in pneumatic and pneumonia. (I cannot think of another word in common usage - e.g. outside of specialized medical or scientific language - beginning with 'pneu.')
Fun fact: The French shorten the phrase for "pneumatic tires" and just refer to one as "le pneu." This made me giggle uncontrollably when I first heard it, because I am six.

An "incentive spirometer" is one where the patient themselves can see the capacity reading in order to give them positive feedback to improve it.
