mellicious: pink manicure (lotus)

Somebody on my Facebook friendslist posted this, and I got interested and wrote a bunch of stuff. (As usual, I'm not tagging anybody but I would be interested to see the answers if you feel like doing it!)

1) When was your wedding day?
May 2nd, 1987

2) What day of the week was it?
Saturday (and like this year, it was Derby Day)

3) Did you get married in a church?
No, we had both the wedding and reception in my parents' back yard. They lived in the country at the time and it was a big back yard - room for tables and a gazebo and all kinds of stuff.

4) How many people in your wedding party?
Three - Rob's dad was the best man and my sister was the maid of honor and my cousin was a bridesmaid.

5) How many guests were invited to your wedding?
I think over a hundred at the end - but when you don't have things catered it's possible to be much less concerned with the numbers. I don't think we even asked for RSVPs. (Really our wedding was an old-fashioned one of the type that people don't seem to have any more. Except that it wasn't at the church. The weddings I grew up going to were invariably followed by cake and punch at the church fellowship hall - I never went to one with dinner and dancing until I was grown.)

6) How long were you together before the engagement?
A little less than a year.

7) How long did you wait to Tie the Knot after the proposal?
6 months

8) Did you register for gifts? if so where?
Foley's, and I think also at Eiband's in Galveston.

9) Where did you go for your Bachelorette/Bachelor parties?
Rob had a bachelor party that I think was at somebody's house. I didn't have a formal bachelorette although I think maybe I went out drinking with some co-workers that night.

10) Did you have a rehearsal dinner and if yes where at?
It was very informal but I think my parents had barbeque or something after we rehearsed. I barely remember it.

11) Who did you hire as your photographer & Videographer?
I guess that videographers existed in 1987, but they certainly weren't standard. We didn't have any money so we never even considered it. We also skipped hiring a photographer, which means we are very short on the posed pictures like everybody else in the world has. This has never really upset me too much, though.

12) Did your father walk you down the aisle?
Yes.

13) What color were the bridesmaid dresses & groomsmen vests?
My sister wore sort of a rose-pink and my cousin wore pale pink. (See answer to next question on the subject of the color-scheme.) Rob and his dad and my dad all wore gray, but Rob was the only one who actually had a tux. The other two just wore suits.

14) What type of wedding gown did you have?
I really had this idea at the time that I wanted a very very pale pink one, and I should have insisted on it. But it would have been hard to find the material, back in the pre-internet days. I had a picture from a bridal magazine of a wedding with all different shades of pink, and that was my idea for the color scheme. But my dress ended up just being white. Not too blinding a white, at least, I think. I found a Vogue pattern that I really liked, and we went to a shop in Houston - now long-gone - which specialized in bridal fabrics (in Rice Village, if any of the Houston people remember that place). We bought satin and lace and various trims and I made the dress myself. Typically for me, I didn't finish hemming it until a couple of days before the wedding, but it came out nice.

15) How was the weather?
I was really worried about the weather issue because it was outside and we didn't even have a tent. I was also worried about being hot in my heavy-ish dress. But it was sunny and sort of windy - on the verge of being a little too windy, but at least it kept it from being too hot. And late that afternoon it clouded up and I think it rained off and on for the next several weeks, so we were very, very lucky, on the whole.

16) What type of ceremony did you have?
Plain old Methodist.

17) What were your flowers?
I had an all-white bouquet to go with the white dress, and it was sort of mixed flowers. Everybody else had pink roses.

18) What flavor was your cake?
Well, this was an issue. I thought I was ordering white with strawberry filling, and I got blinding-pink strawberry-flavored cake. But it was really pretty so I didn't care that much. (Nobody really ate much of it, but I think that was more because we had a lot of other food than because it wasn't good.)

19) Did you have a DJ or a band?
No, but we made our own mix tape. It had all kinds of music on it - I remember insisting on Echo and the Bunnymen being on it - but it was heavy on oldies, and especially wedding-themed songs: "Going to the Chapel" and all that sort of thing.

20) What was your first dance to?
No formal dancing.

21) Did you have open bar?
We were going to have a keg and in the end we didn't. We were partly worried that a lot of our co-workers would come to the wedding and then go to work drunk - we were both working in a restaurant at the time. So we just blew off having liquor at all. We couldn't really afford it, anyway.

22) Did anything go wrong?
Except the cake incident above, not really. A couple of people showed up who weren't invited, but it wasn't a big deal.

23) What was your favorite thing about your wedding day?
It was exactly what I wanted - very low-key and informal.

24) Did you take a Limo or car to the church and reception?
Didn't have to take anything anywhere, since it was in the back yard!

25) Where did you go on your honeymoon?
New Orleans.

26) How long have you been married?
Twenty-two years. It blows my mind.

Twenty-two years! Congratulations.

I'd do this meme myself, but it's remarkable how few of the questions you can answer if you eloped.

Heh. I was thinking of doing it for amusement value.

We semi-eloped, and I could do the meme. I think you should take a crack at it.
