Hymns etc

I caught myself singing "Blessed Assurance" in the shower this morning. Everybody know this song?

(Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine,
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
)

Yike, what a thing to be singing at 7am. I've had it and "At the Cross" stuck in my head off and on since my grandmother's funeral over a week ago. Those were the two hymns she had picked out, evidently - they were sung by a male trio who apparently did not rehearse enough, because they kept missing their cues.

While I'm on the subject of the funeral - my brother-in-law (the very-soon-to-be-ex one) was there, because he brought my nephew down from Austin since my sister had to work, and he was talking about my grandmother's cooking, and I have decided that's the way I want to remember her. She had some good qualities other than her cooking, but she tended to be bitchy and way too tightly wound to be easy to deal with on a day-to-day basis. But if you told her you were going to come visit, she would spend the entire morning fixing a big meal for you. It really was her biggest joy in life, I think, and lemme tell you, it was a joy to eat it, too. That woman could cook. So I'm trying to forget about the bad things and remember the cooking instead.

We spent Saturday night at a Best Western near the airport in Houston, in an effort to avoid the traffic jams on the island during Beach Party Weekend. By all accounts the traffic wasn't too bad, though. Attendance was down; there were "only" 75,000 people here instead of the quarter-million we've had in the past. (Galveston's entire population, by comparison, is about 60,000.) I did get my 2nd quilt finished for the quilt show, and in the nick of time, too, since it starts on Thursday. (There is a picture of the not-quite-finished version here; I would also like to note in my defense that I am probably not the last person to finish. In my experience there are usually a couple of people that bring their quilts in on Thursday morning and say they were sewing in the car!)

We went to the mainland in the first place on Saturday to have a pre-birthday dinner with my mother and Art. (My birthday is actually Wednesday.) So that was nice, although I was sort of sinusy and whiny again, it probably would've been a little easier on everybody if we had done it a different day. It all worked out pretty decently in the end, though.

We got back early yesterday, and I - guess what - played GuildWars most of the rest of the day. And watched baseball. That was about it. (The Astros are something like 13-5. Go boys go!)
