Endgame, and other updates
May. 7th, 2019 12:56 amI meant to post about Endgame sooner than this, but I've been sick. When I went to see the MDA doc the other day, I had a slight temperature (99-ish) - they seemed slightly alarmed, but I said that I had had a sore throat for a couple of days and they seemed mollified - and then that was followed by coughing and some sneezing, so I imagine it was a virus of some sort. (Oncologists seem a bit jumpy, in my experience so far, but I guess having immunocompromised patients will lead to that.) I was trying to work through it, but finally I called in sick on Friday. I try not to call in sick more than I can help, because somebody has to be there to replace me if I don't come in. Luckily there was somebody willing to cover for me. And I'm still coughing a bit, but I'm finally feeling better now.
Since we're already on the health issues, I will tell you about the other medical updates - I still haven't started the radiation treatments, because they were waiting on the test to come back to see whether they thought I would benefit from chemo. The RadOnc doctor was very firm on having chemo first if I needed it. But the test finally came back and my oncotype was low, my doctor said, which I guess means not as invasive? (i didn't think to question it at the time). Anyway, no chemo, yay! And I have another RadOnc appointment next week and I assume we'll finally get the radiation treatments under way shortly after that.
SPOILERS BELOW...
I liked Endgame a lot. We have actually been twice - on the first day and then again yesterday.
I gather some people were put off by the fat jokes, but for me that was mostly offset by the fact that Thor didn't magically get thin again at the end. (I didn't think the fat-suit was especially convincing, though. C'mon, we know Hemsworth is still all buff under there.) It was clearly meant to be a PTSD thing and I think that's a reasonable reaction under the circumstances. I thought the various ways that people reacted to their grief was reasonably realistic, although the thing that bugged me was that they acted like NYC was all shut down even though there's still millions of people living there. It's not the freaking superflu. (I'm thinking of The Stand here.)
(I went off and watched some MCU-related videos in the middle of writing about this - I have been on kind of a tear of watching old MCU movies, too, including a couple that I haven't watched in ages (esp. Iron Man 2, which I don't think I've ever seen maybe twice).
The first time we went, we went to the fancy Cinemark with the recliners and everything, which was awesome. The second time we went to the little local chain which we go to most often, and they don't have the fancy seats but they're cheaper and their picture and sound is generally perfectly good. I enjoyed the hell of it both times. (I took one bathroom break each time: the first time I went right after they go to see Hulk, and apparently I missed baby Ant-Man that time. The second time I went right after they start talking about going to New Jersey and apparently I missed the Stan Lee cameo.) Oh, the best part of the first time was this young black guy who was sitting next to me, by himself, and he was SO into it, it was great. I think that audience that time was very vocal in general but I wasn't so aware of every little thing everybody behind was saying. The second time, I think a lot of the crowd had probably already seen it (at least) once and they weren't near as vocal, but there were a couple of times that people really jumped out of their seats and screamed about something. (One in particular, but I can't remember where it was exactly, darnit.)
As far as the plot twists and turns, I was surprised that there was quite so much of the multiverse stuff involved - by which I mostly mean multiple versions of characters from different points in their timestream. I knew that they pretty much had to get a lot of the dusted people back again, and I figured that some sort of time-travel had to be involved, but you still can't know how many of them would come back or how that would work. exactly, so there were still plenty of surprises involved. (I had decided that it had to have to do with Doctor Strange's one good outcome, though, and I was right there.)
I'm ready to go a third time. I imagine it will be a couple of weeks before I can talk Rob into it again, though - he's not as big a fan of multiple rewatches as I am.

Date: 2019-05-07 03:37 pm (UTC)The comments I read about Endgame had to do with female characters being given short shrift. You didn't mention anything like that, so maybe these were just disgruntled feminists sounding off.
Hope you soon get rid of the cough. Those things seem to hang on forever. I just noticed the other day that mine was finally gone, after a month! Sheesh!
