Too early

(Starting right out with the random:)

I saw a woman with an armful of roses - definitely a dozen or more - walking into work this morning. I wanted to ask if somebody gave them to her, or she was giving them to somebody, or what. She was not quite in earshot, though, or I might have.

Wow, my computer has shipped already. They originally had 11/2 as the shipping date, and I'm not surprised that it shipped earlier than that, but one business day? (It looks like it shipped on Saturday, actually.) That's pretty amazing.

Weather is still beautiful. I don't know how long it'll last - it's already been a week - but I sure do like it. (Although it's freezing in my office. We always have this problem when it's cool outside.)

I woke up at 4 this morning, stayed in bed for ages and tried to pretend I was sleepy, and finally gave up at 5:30 and got up. I was going to go to work at 7 but it ended up being 7:45 before I got there. Which just goes to show you that, as I have long maintained, I am incapable of being early. (7:45 is when I am technically supposed to be at work these days, when we are doing the flex schedule thing.)

We got a lot done this weekend. Rob did some more cleaning on the old apartment - he volunteered, I was going to hire somebody to do it - and I unpacked. There is now china in the china cabinet and books on the bookshelves and all that kind of stuff. Not to say that everything is unpacked - it's definitely not - but the number of boxes is definitely shrinking. We have to get one dresser/bureau thing out of the old apartment by next weekend - and one bed and one couch out of my mom's townhouse soon, too, though there's no definite deadline on that. We put a sign up by the mailboxes about the dresser and we will see if anybody bites. (I put "vintage" dresser on the sign - I think c. 1960 counts as vintage, don't you? It certainly would if it was clothing.) I am spending next weekend at the quilt show so I need to get that taken care of pretty soon.

Ergonomics

I did get some GuildWars in this weekend - not a lot, but some - and what I found was that I loathe playing games on that computer, and incidentally that I also hate playing at my mom's nice computer desk. The slide-out keyboard is too low, the desk itself is too high, so there's noplace that's at the right height to suit me. Which is ok, in the end, because both of those will be Rob's when the new computer gets here, and I can go back to playing on the little piece o'crap desk which is the only remaining piece of furniture that Rob had before we got married. It's not a bad little desk, actually, except that it needs refinishing, and more importantly it is starting to develop a crack across the top, probably from me pounding on it all the time! (But hopefully it won't fall apart completely any time soon - especially once it has my shiny new monitor on it!)

I didn't really want a laptop, incidentally. I know a lot of people love theirs, but I like playing at a desk. I have enough back and hip trouble without trying to play GuildWars on my lap.

I think I'm going to try plugging the old Dell in at the desk where the Compaq is, just to see what happens. I've already tried it in two different wall sockets, so I don't think that's the problem... but just in case. It's too late to cancel the new computer, even if it decided to work - but at least if it was to boot up, I could get my data off of it! (I have a save of everything crucial that's only 10 days old or so... but I would like to have some of the non-crucial things I didn't think of - like all my GW builds!)

I am somewhat relieved to report that the Dell does not work even when hooked up to the exact same connections as this one (power cord and all). Even though I had already tried two different power cords and two different wall sockets, I had still convinced myself that it was going to work when I tried this. But nope, nada. Exactly the same as before. (Various people have suggested in the past few days that it might be the power source or the video card, as well as the hard drive. I certainly don't know how to fix a power source, and as to video cards, I put a new one in it a year ago and I certainly don't intend to go there again.)

A big amen to this one:

S&R: If you were Jesus, would you use your divine powers to meddle in the outcome of sporting events, as teams like the Rockies believe he does?

Taibbi: If and when I ever get to be Interior Minister, one of my first acts is going to be the putting to death of anyone who thinks God interferes in the outcome of things like sporting events and elections. I’d want to have a giant shark tank built expressly for this purpose. Just throw them in there and then dump a couple of barrels of cow blood in the water.
