I'm not actually putting a link in this post, because I'm not at all sure I want to reward these people for this, but it's something I've never seen before so I have to comment on it:

The above was stamped in red ink onto a $5 bill I got this morning. Obviously it got my attention. Of course I imagine it's also quite illegal. Isn't there a law about defacing bills? I think there is, anyway.

But still, it's a new form of advertising - in my experience, anyway - and that makes it interesting.

No idea. I know that the supermarket nearby has people using that pen on all bills greater than $20 to ensure that they aren't counterfeit. The mark probably fades, though.

Every other blue moon, I see a Where's George dollar bill. Also, in the Village, I will encounter a bill stamped with something that means "This bill was used by someone who is gay to demonstrate our purchasing power."

Now, using a bill for advertising is probably not cool... but I am unsure about other purposes.

Oh, I don't think they'd come after you for, say, Where's George, either - but for advertising? I think they might, especially if you started trying to do it in any methodical way. (However, I doubt that one person with a stamp pad could stamp enough bills to get noticed, anyway.)
