mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (nails)

I've spent the last couple of hours trying to come up with a favorite nail polish of 2017. I think I figured it out but I still need to take some pictures for it. (Or maybe I don't, really, but I have to look at what I already have, at least.) The result will be up on the nail blog, but probably not until Tuesday. Today I have a list of every polish that I could come up with that I wore for the first time this year, which is the list that I used to pick my favorites from. Tomorrow I have a top 10. I'm saving the big reveal for Tuesday, when I figure more people will be back at work and wanting to read frivolous blog posts.

I talk about it every time I have to come up with a favorite movie or even a favorite color. I just don't seem to think of things that way. With movies and with books, I have more of a shortlist of things I love. (Music is even worse, I have long list of things instead.) With color, I used to say it was red, years ago, and then I started quilting and I realized I basically love all colors. Red is great and it's the one I look really good in, but I don't wear it on my nails much at all. (It's especially prone to chipping, for some reason, and I hate polishes that chip. And red lipstick smears - there seems to be something about red pigment.) I managed to come up with a favorite polish by process of elimination - get it down to a smallish list (15 or 20) then narrow it down again and again. When I got down to three I went and pulled the bottles out and looked at them, and I could see which one was the winner in my eyes almost immediately. But if I try to pick from too many it's overwhelming.

In other news, we've been watching Mindhunter, and even though we're still on episodes I've already seen before (because I watched them at my sister's house two weeks ago) I am still thoroughly creeped out. Actually I think it was even creepier the second time through.

We went to see Jumanji a couple of days ago, and I really liked it. I was a bit surprised. I know I saw the old one once, years ago (I think on TV or video, probably, not in a theater) but all I remembered was that the game came alive or something and that there were a lot of stampeding animals. I think I liked this new one more because a lot of the plot takes off from videogames. I think mostly the games sounded more like the ones I never played (like Tomb Raider, etc.), but still, I get it. I sat there the whole time calculating how many lives people had left. Anyway, tomorrow we may go see The Last Jedi again. There's some more things we would like to see but they would all require going to the Cinemark and both of us tend to avoid that (it's always so crowded!) unless there's something we really want to see. We'll have to see if anything manages to get us there in the next few weeks.

Well, 2017 is basically over (there's another hour, here) - I can hear fireworks popping outside. We're supposed to have a hard freeze tomorrow night, which is cold by our standards, and I feel for  you guys where it's way worse. (I saw on Twitter something about the daytime temperature in Canada being lower than on Mars - that's pretty trippy. Really I can't even imagine.)

Happy New Year! I don't think I'll be able to get Sean to go to The Last Jedi again. He was glad he'd seen it, but mostly underwhelmed. http://boston.conman.org/2017/12/18.1 It's my feeling that he overthinks Star Wars movies, but he does know practically every word of the original six, and is familiar with all the other various iterations. Still, I think he's too critical. I might go again, by myself.

My friends in Brooksmith saw 24 degrees this morning and are expecting lower tonight. They rescue horses and have water tanks all over the place where the horses drink during the day. They have to go out and sledgehammer the ice each morning. Not this kid. I'm sitting here shivering in high 40s at night. Gaaaa. Way too cold for me.

I'll check the nail blog on Tuesday.

Sean actually says he'd go again! Parts of it he really liked. I just never know.

Maybe we'll have better seats this time, too. Even our little Caremark theaters tend to ease up after the first week.

You're right, he didn't hate it. At least, not all of it. He loved the interplay with Luke, Rey and Kilo Ren. We had quite a discussion about why he was so negative. For one thing, he thought the casino was totally wrong. It didn't belong in the Star Wars universe, it belonged in Las Vegas. In fact, he didn't think Po and Rose should have gone there at all. He was put off by Po's hotdogging, which I pointed out was pretty much the same as Han Solo, in his day. Sean just thought there was entirely too much failure on the part of the Resistance. No matter what they tried, it went sour for one reason or another.

We decided it's just that I'm more episodic in my viewing. Each movie stands alone for me. I don't need it to be part of "the universe." I see Rian Johnson as trying to move on from the original Star Wars base, with new characters and plots. I'm not as immersed in the canon.

When I saw the very last scene, I thought it was totally unnecessary. I was sure the movie ended with the previous scene. When those kids showed up I thought, this thing is never going to end. I had missed the broom flying into the child's hand, which pretty much made the whole scene sensible. It was really the key to the whole movie, and I had blinked at the wrong time. We'll see how it goes the second time around.

Okay, I've encountered a problem on your nail blog. It won't let me comment because it doesn't know me. I tried using my LiveJournal ID, but it said somebody called bloggerdotcom wanted to verify my LiveJournal address, as well. I don't know who that is, so I said no, and it wouldn't let me publish my comment. Do you know how I can be identified under OpenID? I use that with another blog I read, but don't know how I was ever added to that list. I'm attaching the comment I wanted to leave over there, so I don't lose it entirely. Cyberspace is wonderful until it's not...

"The Northern Lights one is gorgeous. My favorite color is purple, so I'm drawn to the purple and violet shades. This one has a bit more blue than I prefer, but it really is beautiful.

A few years ago I decided to treat myself better, including a monthly mani/pedi at my favorite salon, with my favorite technician. I feel so pampered and steeped in luxury. Then I discovered gel manicure, and I've never looked back. I do so many hands-on hobbies, such as woodworking and gardening, and my manicures suffered for it. Not anymore. Gel lasts me 3-4 weeks easily. They use predominantly OPI enamels, which suits me fine. It has always stayed on best for me, gel or no. I get the corresponding regular color for my feet and that stays on, as well.

I have a bad habit of chewing on my cuticles, left over from having been a nail-biter until about eighth grade. I find that investing in a good manicure has helped me avoid mutilating my cuticles, except when I'm especially stressed.

It would probably work if I let bloggerdotcom validate my ID, which I wouldn't do. I'll see if I can find a way around it. I'll keep trying.

I just tried again, with the same result. I let them validate my info, but it threw me into an endless loop asking for validation. What I wanted to say is that I went to Spring Training on the 22nd at the Park of the Palm Beaches, when the Astros played the Marlins. I got a World Series Champions tee shirt! Altuve is such a cutie!!

I"m seeing some hopeful signs in my new team, so far this year. When we won that game in 17 innings, my guys celebrated as if they'd won the Series! They were like a bunch of kids cavorting around on the infield! Good stuff!
