I was whining about being sick, and so I wrote an entry about it last night, and then I spent several hours reading my way back through the sick tag for years and years - and I mean that, because my old LJ entries got ported over here. Years of me whining about sinuses and allergies and various cold/flu symptoms. Honestly it made me feel better (in a way), because I still get sick, but not like I was back then. I think it mostly subsided about a year or so after we moved out of Galveston, even though we didn't move all that far. I guess it was far enough that the allergens were different, though! I'm not sure exactly when I started posting on LJ a lot but the "sick" tag stopped (or, well, started) in early 2006.

(
I feel better today, except once in a while I have to stop and cough for a few minutes. Not a bad price to pay.)

I'm watching Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them - I just got to the part where it mentions "the wilds of Arizona" in passing (that's where the thunderbird came from, that may ring a bell for some of you). I have a nail polish that's from a set called The Wilds of Arizona (here) - it's from an indie polish brand and those tend to be very geek-centered but it never occurred to me until another re-watch of this movie that it might be a reference to the Harry Potter universe. Anyway, I've always loved this movie. I just wish the ones that came after it had been anywhere near as good.

I was doing really well on daily entries but all of a sudden I hit a wall or something. Writing is giving me a headache. I'm having allergy issues so that may have something to do with it. (First I phrased it that I was having trouble coming up with stuff to write, but it's not really topics that's the problem.)

Oh! I will add that Rob had another try at going to Violent Night and he reported back that he liked it. "Sort of like Die Hard, but much more violent," is more or less what he said. (I had seen the trailer and realized that they meant the violence part seriously, that was why I didn't want to go.)

Maybe nobody cares but me, but I was pretty happy to see the MLB players and management come to an agreement this week. I was starting to prepare myself for a long drought. Baseball's really the only sport I follow any more. So spring training games starting like, Friday, woo!

Last weekend Rob went to Ohio (without me, because I won't fly any more) so there was no movie night last week, and we're a week behind seeing The Batman. (Actually in my head I call it "THE Batman", with a huge overemphasis on the "the", because that whole thing where they distinguish it from the others by "the" is kind of weird.) SO we went to see it yesterday and I actually really liked it. I had tried to avoid spoilers and so all I really knew was who played Batman and Alfred and Catwoman, and that it was 3 hours long and "dark" - I completely wasn't sure what to expect and maybe that helped, I don't know. I'm old enough that I'm pretty sure I remember going to see the old Adam West Batman movie in a theater - I would have been 7, maybe? - and so I have a long history with Batman movies. I've seen pretty much all of them, even Batman and Robin. And I think this one totally worked.

The only other movie that we've seen since the last time I posted was Cyrano, which I also liked a lot, except that I cried through about the last third of it and came home with a headache. And then I got that song stuck in my head for days, but hey, at least it pushed the Encanto soundtrack out of my brain for a couple of days!

(I saw somebody say online somewhere that The Batman made them cry, but I didn't have that reaction to it, thank goodness. My allergies are acting up and I've had plenty of headaches lately as it is!)

  • The Batman
  • Cyrano
  • Belfast
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home (twice in 2022 and once in 2021)
  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife (also one we'd seen in 2021, because nothing much came out in January!)
...and Rob also saw:
  • The Cursed
  • Scream

I spent the day today working at a hospital I'd never even been to before - but it is part of the same hospital system Rob & I both work for, and it's the closest one to where we live, so that part is nice. I was supposed to be screening people for Covid symptoms, but actually I didn't do all that much, because there were a lot of people at the desk, and everybody kept chiming in before I got anything out. ("Have you had cough-fever-bodyaches-difficulty breathing?") But I'm presumably going back next week so at least I know the drill of working there somewhat now. Rob spent the day at a different place doing the same thing. The facility where we normally work is closed, being "nonessential" and potentially hazardous as far as being a disease vector, to boot, but all of the employees at the hospital system are considered essential and we just get reassigned to do different things, as long as we don't get sick. (My understanding is that if we actually get sick, we will get paid even if we don't get sick leave, which I don't since I'm part-time. I haven't heard that officially though.)

My boss would have liked to have kept me for spreadsheet-making purposes, actually - that's a really useful job skill in a lot of places! I told her if I have any hours left - which is probably unlikely, really - I'll come in and work one day next week. We have to keep track of how much money we are losing by being closed, for one thing - I think they need it for FEMA. I believe we went through that after Hurricane Ike, too, as I recall. Probably Harvey, too, although somebody else must've done the spreadsheets for that one. (We were stuck at home with flooded creeks between us and work for a solid week, some of you guys may recall.)

I do have a scratchy throat but that's just my usual allergy crap. Every time I have the tiniest symptom I over-analyze it, I imagine everybody is doing that. But anyway, we're hanging in there so far. Running low on toilet paper, but hopefully we'll find some before it actually runs out and we have to resort to Kleenex, heaven forbid! (I do have a lot of tissues of various brands due to said allergies, so I guess that's a pretty good backup in a pinch.)

Ugh.

Well, I have given in and I have a doctor's appointment in the morning. If nothing else, I figure they can give me a referral to an allergist, and I think it's time to try that. I last went to an ENT doc nearly 10 years ago, and she wasn't even an allergy specialist - somebody may have some ideas they didn't then. Plus, I've had sore throats off and on for weeks now, and while I do think it's likely that it's just allergies, it's time (probably past time) to rule out the other stuff, too. Obviously I've been avoiding it, but man, I'm tired of being sick.

I have not gotten far on my little to-do list from yesterday, except that I did make progress on the making and sending of cards. Some I've done are actually mostly handmade and others less so, but so far I haven't resorted to my leftover bought cards from past years at all. I've been taking scans of the more original ones and I'll post those later, after the recipients have had time to see them. But I'm a little bit happier with myself on that score. Just getting off my butt and doing anything is a triumph these days. I even have a war-wound - I sliced my finger open a little bit with the paper-trimmer - nothing too bad, though.

The fact is, I am not feeling much holiday spirit this year. It comes and it goes so fast now that it doesn't seem like there's time to enjoy it. I guess that's just a part of getting older. (And I think maybe you adjust to the whoosh of time as it goes by. At least, sometimes I think I'm starting to.)

Well, we did finish watching the old "Lost" in time for the new "Lost" and I was pretty glad we did. It appears that we stopped watching right about the time the show started improving. And god knows there's not much else to watch right now, anyway!

Partly in service of improving the "nothing to watch" problem, I finally went onto netflix.com and reported the "House" disk that disappeared while we were moving as lost. (Heh, maybe it'll turn up on the island!!) It gave me a message when it went through that you can return the lost disk for a refund if it turns up within a year, which is nice - especially since I keep expecting it to turn up any day now. I know I saw it when we were packing, so unless we accidentally gave it to Goodwill, it ought to be here someplace! The problem is the boxes full of papers - mostly my mom's stuff - that we haven't gotten around to scanning/shredding yet. If it's in there, no telling how long it will be! The next thing we need to do, Netflix-wise, is either watch or return the two X-Files disks we have had out for ages.

This weekend is Mardi Gras (that is, the Galveston version, which is largely confined to the two weekends prior to Fat Tuesday), and the weather is supposed to be pretty nice for the Momus parade, which in turn means the traffic in Galveston, and especially getting in and out of town, will be horrific. We don't ever go to the parades, mostly because neither of us is big on crowds. One of these years I need to buy us grandstand tickets so that we will obliged to go to the big parade. It's supposed to be pretty nice, and I know that a good many people I know are probably actually in the parade, since it's a big deal in certain circles here. (Mostly the kind of circles that have money. Krewe membership is expensive.)

My sinuses are still making me crazy. It probably has to do with the ever-changing weather we get this time of year - one day cold, the next day warm. Quite literally. Yesterday morning it was pouring down rain; yesterday afternoon I got out on the porch and watered the plants barefoot. But this morning it was cold again.

I got my hair colored again yesterday even though it'd only been about six weeks, I think. But my bangs were way the hell down in my eyes and the gray was already visible in my roots, and I thought, well, if I'm going to go get my bangs trimmed I might as well do the whole shebang and get it over with. But I can't make a habit of doing it that often, it costs too much. I did make sure the guy trimmed the front shorter this time. Last time we were chatting madly about something-or-other and I forgot to pay sufficient attention to the haircut. I need to watch that. The haircut as a whole looks good, anyway, and so does the color. I look about 10 years younger with my hair colored and cut right, I really do.

I have to quote[personal profile] ursulahitler because this cracked me up - from a political discussion the other day: 'Look at this way: whoever wins, we'll be trading way, way up. The mayor from "Buffy" would be an improvement! Pre or post ascension, either way, he'd be better than W!'
