mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (yoda)
I was mentioning that I'm having trouble juggling everything this month - part of that was sleep deprivation, so I'm not making any hasty decisions - but I'm thinking at the moment that it may be Holidailies that are going to go. Or at least, worrying about regular posting there is going to go. We'll see.

(One of these days I'm going to lose momentum on the nail blog and never post to it again, based on past history. But I've been posting practically every day for a couple of years now, so we'll see about that, too. Right now I'm still enjoying it.)
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (nablopomo)
I posted a video and some links about the music of 1983 yesterday, and then, because the embed code is apparently wonky, I published another entry with another video. It had a paragraph of text so I went ahead and used that for a Holidailies entry just now, even though I really think that's cheating. It's not cheating by Holidailies' own standards, I know - I remember Jette saying ages ago that you can just post a picture every day if you want to.- but it's cheating by my personal internal standards of what constitutes an entry. I guess I'm a little old-school about that. I don't necessarily think you have to have five random things, as they used to say, but I feel like I have to have at least, say, two or three paragraphs of random drivel before it counts. (Or one long paragraph would do, too, I suppose.)

I'm not even sure how long I've been doing Holidailies. More than ten years, for sure. I think I started in 2004? Or was it 2003? It was 2003 at the earliest - I had no journal before that - and I'm pretty sure 2005 at the latest. It was so long ago that I started out on Diary-X, for god's sake. (I could check my Livejournal, or check the old LJ entries here, for that matter, because I know there was a point where I mention on Livejournal that I was doing Holidailies on Diary-X, but every time I go look at the old entries I fall into an hours-long wormhole, so that would probably end any chance that I would finish this tonight. I have to go to bed before dawn tonight.)

Oh yeah, that - the staying-up-til dawn thing, I mean. I literally watched TV all night last night. That's not really terribly unusual for me, if it's baseball or some movie, but it's unusual for me to watch MSNBC all night and end up going to bed during Morning Joe, at least it is nowadays. I stay up that late a lot, but I don't usually stick with MSNBC that long. I really do love MSNBC, but usually when it starts over with some show that I already paid attention to the first time, I turn it off. But I was transfixed enough by the Alabama election results that I just turned off the sound when they started repeating Chris Matthews' midnight hour (I guess that was at 3am) instead of turning it off, and turned it on again at 4 when the early-morning news started up. I'm not really sure what time I actually went to bed - maybe at 7? I was very sleepy by then, and I got up at 1:30, I know, so that's not really enough sleep. I got through the day ok, but if I do it again I'm going to be very sorry.
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (nails)
I've just washed my hair, and I've got bare nails and I think I've decided what polish is going on. Tuesday is the start of my work-week, or at least this week it is. And I have to go in relatively early, too, so there's no question of me being able to do some of this when I get up. So expect a rambly entry here, between coats of nail polish.

I know some of you guys know already, and I'm sure others don't, that I have a nail blog. (It's called "Delicious Color" which was a play on mellicious/delicious, see, although "mellicious" itself was just a silly pun in the first place. I increasingly wish I'd thought up a better name, but eh.) I started out just putting up the occasional entry, but for the last year or more I've been posting really regularly, practically every day. Most posts are just a picture of a polish and a swatch, and I talk a little (or occasionally a lot) about the polish in question. I have a really large number of nail polishes - like, many hundreds - so basically the blog has just become my personal reference work so I can remember what's what. I do have some readers but I've never particularly sought them out, and I don't do fancy swatches or try to get PR merchandise or anything. Sometimes I talk about makeup and stuff like that - the last post yesterday was about eyeshadow, which is probably a first.

I've been gradually slowing down on nail polish purchases, since I already have more than I can possibly wear, but I've made up for it by really being obsessed with (mostly expensive) moisturizers for the last couple of years. My latest obsession seems to be fancy (and also expensive) hair products. I bought some Bumble and Bumble stuff and then Sephora had $20 off a $50 purchase for VIBs (which is, like, their frequent buyer program - I hardly ever go into a Sephora store but I do buy far too much online) so I bought some Briogeo scalp stuff that Kathleen Lights was talking about. (That's here, and it's a sponsored post, for the record. I had used Briogeo products before so I didn't care, but I don't want to link to that without saying so!)

I don't remember Sephora doing that $20 off $50 thing before, but it's actually a really smart thing to do this time of year, now that I think about it, because you could use it on a gift or you could use it for a gift for yourself like I did! I don't think I would have bought what I bought at full price. Kathleen had a code, too, and I was looking at that but then I remembered the Sephora promo and I realized that that was going to end up being cheaper from Sephora, even though what I bought was less than $50. (I added a sale item to get it up to $50.)

I keep my nails cut pretty short these days but I still wear whatever crazy nail polish I want. My employer does not judge my choice of nail polish! I took a shoebox-sized box of nail polish with me when I went up to my aunt's a couple of weeks ago - I figured my cousins would be around, and they were - and got them to take most of it off my hands (figuratively speaking). I forget that a lot of the nail polish I have is what other people would consider "out there" - some of my cousins were like, "Oh, I would never wear blue" - or purple, for god's sake, I think of purple as being middle of the road. (I think I'm about to put Zoya Carter on, actually, which is purple and glittery and probably they would think is out there, too.)

I've just put base-coat on so far. I noticed as I did that that my nails are stained pretty badly - it probably has to do with all the orange polish I wore all during October while the playoffs were going on. (Or maybe it was something else - blue is usually the worst staining culprit.)

(If I get a decent picture of Carter, I'll put it up later.) (Later: that's here.)

P.S. I just realized that my fifth blogiversary went by on the nail blog without me thinking to say anything about it. Not that it's a big deal, but I have kept up with it for a pretty long time!
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (Dr Who - giant robot)

As I have undoubtedly said before, I have never understood that "5 random things make an entry" meme. I find it unaccountably annoying, somehow. Why 5? What's wrong with three? or seven, for that matter? (Which isn't to say that I'll stop with three, anyway, I'm just sayin'.)

I've been reading back over my old Holidailies entries, and maybe I should resolve with Stef to talk LESS about the holidays, odd as that may seem. (Everybody needs to read Stef's entry, in any case, because it's awesome.) I can just refer you back to the last five-years-plus of old Holidailies entries for pretty much any particular holiday subject, anyway.

I've been doing this for more than 5 years, actually, if not quite from the beginning, but the oldest ones were on Diary-X and are long-gone. There's lots of whining about that in the LJ archives, too, if you're interested. (Also some on my old Whys and Wherefores blog, which I had forgotten about until I went looking for the CW bit that I linked yesterday. There are also some resurrected entries from Diary-X over there - the link above is to one - that I had forgotten were there, and I can't say that I remember exactly where I resurrected them from, either. Maybe I had just saved some of them on Notebook or somewhere like I'm doing with this one now.)

I'm at work and it's slow, so this might be a long entry. Or if it gets really long, I might go ahead and post it and start another one! Hopefully it won't be THAT slow, though, or it's gonna be a long afternoon. Generally I am good at finding ways to fill my afternoons on slow days, though. I read Go Fug Yourself, or look at Pinterest, and I used to fool around with Glitch, a year or so ago when I was still all into that. I mention that because I was just over  there - although being there generally seems kind of useless now, since it's about to shut down. I had a bunch of credits, though, so I bought some wardrobe stuff, just the same (see below) - I think it's appropriate that I go out wearing a tiara! (Old joke which a few of you will get...)

In other game news, our current one is Guild Wars 2, which I am not going to talk about too much right now, because I'm sure there will be one or more entries about at a later date, assuming I follow past patterns. I will say, though, that my sylvari elementalist is up to level 75, now, since I've been playing her exclusively. And the reason for that is that Col, my normal game-playing partner, has been off writing a novel. (Not doing NaNoWriMo, or he'd be done now - theoretically, anyway. He's just writing a novel.) Anyway, sticking with one character is not something I normally do, much, and it does do wonders for leveling. 80 is the cap in this game, so I'm going to get there, and soon. I'm not anywhere near done with the story part of the game, though.

Really completely random thing: my dad got stung by jellyfish so many times that he became immune. (I think it was Guild Wars that reminded me of this, because there are jellyfish pets. They are much cooler than real jellyfish. Or cooler than the jellyfish that I have personally encountered, anyway.)

I am amused that half of the Holidailies entries I have read so far are something to the effect of, "Fuck, why did I sign up for this?" I've been doing this long enough that I have quit panicking about it. I always manage to think of something to say. It's never great art, but oh well. (That could be my motto in life, actually.)

Epiphany

Jan. 6th, 2009 01:43 pm
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (winter trees)
It's already the last day of Holidailies - Epiphany. Not being of a religious persuasion, I have nothing particular to say about Epiphany itself. However, I like the idea of the 12 days of Christmas and I sort of wish more people would extend the celebration of Christmas after Christmas, rather than before. But I know that's probably a vain wish. A lot of Americans seem to think that "Boxing Day" means "the day you box up all your Christmas stuff for next year" and for some reason I find that depressing. I took all my decorations down gradually and I think I have them all down now (unlike a couple of years when my tree has still been up well into January) but I didn't even start taking them down until several days after Christmas, just on general principle.

Holidailies was pretty easy for me this year. The things I wrote may not have been the most fascinating in the world, but at least I didn't agonize over what to write like I have some years. And while I was a reader again this year - after skipping last year - Jette and Chip have gotten the process where it's pretty painless, too. I like doing it because I always find some journals I wouldn't have found otherwise.

Sue of My Incredibly Unremarkable Life wrote today about the importance of people detailing their everyday lives, and I agree with that. In fact, she says she was the person who wrote Dear Abby and fussed at her about telling somebody to throw away their grandmother's diary, which I remember reading at the time and really appreciating! (Dear Abby - who I think is actually Abby's daughter nowadays, isn't she? - frequently has her head up her ass, quite frankly, as far as I can tell, but she still has quite a lot of readers, presumably, in that ever-shrinking group of People Who Still Read Newspapers.)

Oh, speaking of People Who Still Read Newspapers, I have rejoined that group to some extent, after a very long hiatus. I gave up trying to read the newspaper (offline) years ago because I just ended up with lots of mostly-unread newsprint cluttering up my house. I say "to some extent" I rejoined because I got a Sunday-only subscription. I don't do very well about reading day-to-day but I do seem to like to read the Sunday paper, still. Even if it's Wednesday or so before I get around to reading some of it. (Besides, the Sunday paper has all the good ads and things.)

OK, I have to go be useful now. Holidailies people, stop by and visit once in a while!
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (Halloween - faces)
In the shower this morning, I was thinking about the things I buy that I really can't afford. The shower is a natural place to think about this because it's full of them. Biolage shampoo, Vitabath, L'Occitane soap. I seem to have a bit of a fetish about bath stuff.

Now you have to understand that we are people of very moderate income. I'm a secretary and Rob is, well, a janitor, basically. (Although I very rarely use that word. I don't like it.) We are pretty well-paid as those professions go and we have wonderful benefits, but still. Not really high-paying jobs. We try live a reasonably moderate lifestyle to go along with the moderate income, but the world does not make that easy, you know? I gave in on the Biolage after I started paying to get my hair colored instead of doing it myself - I decided if I was investing that much in my hair I ought to invest in maintaining the color, too, so I started buying shampoo that's especially for color-treated hair, and it does seem to help. There are cheaper ones than Biolage, god knows, but it works really really well and one of the big liter bottles lasts me nearly a year. So I decided not to feel guilty about that one. (Even though it's $20 a bottle if it's not on sale.)

There's probably other things that qualify. I gave in and got a cell phone a good many years ago, for security reasons. I drive by myself a good bit and it makes me - and my family - feel better about that. I recently gave in on the question of high-speed internet, too - that one is not so easily justifiable, but boy, I sure do like it. I made do with dialup at home for a long, long time and I don't want to go back.

We only had two trick-or-treaters last night. They were very tiny - I didn't get a good look at them since Rob answered the door, but the knock was so faint you could barely hear it. They must not have been more than two or three years old.

I was trying to buy stamps online earlier and the Postal Service is not making it easy on me. Apparently the whole online store is down - I don't imagine the Postal Service is too happy about that, either, actually. I get aggravated with them anyway, because their website(s) don't really make it terribly easy on you - if you go to usps.GOV there is a website there but no obvious way to order stamps. I guess you are supposed to go to usps.COM to order stamps. (Which isn't working, anyway, so don't try it if you want to order stamps. Although the rest of it seems to work.)

I think I get sort of obsessive about stamps, anyway. I went there today because I wanted to order holiday stamps and it pisses me off that I can't. They have some stamps with snowflakes that I like, and it's certainly not too early to start thinking (at least in a vague way!) about Christmas cards.

I'm trying to remember any ideas I come up with for something to write about so that I won't run out of stuff, if I'm really going to write an entry every day this month. (And next month, too, since I always do Holidailies.) Although I usually write a good many holiday-themed entries for that - and heck, since all of my past ones went into the black hole that's all that's left of Diary-X, I can consider myself to have a blank slate there, and feel free to start over again, topic-wise.

mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (Buffy quote: episode 1 bored)
I wrote in the paper journal while I was gone, and I'm going to transcribe this just as I wrote it, and probably make it a "friends-only" entry so I won't have to worry about if I wrote anything bad about my aunt, or whether people want their names online, or whatever. So all (three) of my LJ friends will get the pleasure of reading the unedited version, I guess. (Not that I probably wrote anything very bad about my aunt anyway. At the moment I'm more pissed off at my mother.)

There's more! )
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (Potter - sit down)
I changed my default picture, incidentally. Brad and Rose were starting to bore me. (I'll be glad when [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda gets her book done so she can get back to the important stuff like making icons.)

I wrote two journal entries this weekend. One is up now (look at the user info page if you want the link) and one will be up later. Neither one of them is incredibly long but still, that's more than I usually get done.

I really haven't done much else today. Had sex (which is SOP on Sundays), listened to the baseball game, read. I'm re-reading Wolves of the Calla and The Amber Spyglass sort of simultaneously. I have things to read that I haven't read before but for some reason I seem to be unable to get interested in those.
mellicious: Quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 1st episode: "The earth is doomed." (Default)
I've been trying to figure out what to do with my various "web presences" - I really didn't intend to do anything with this one, originally, but I think I'm going to use it to just talk about my day when I'm in the mood to. I've been doing that some in my Diary-X journal, but somehow it doesn't feel right. My brain seems to think that "real" journal entries are supposed to be a little more organized than that. So, fine, I'll do it here.

Then I also have a couple of weblogs, now - one which is political, which I've been keeping for several months, and a brand-new one devoted to quilting (because I was complaining about there not being enough quilting blogs - see the latest journal entry - so I figured I ought to start one, right?) - it has exactly one entry at the moment. Don't expect too much there for a while.

So... well, today I worked. That was very exciting. It was slow, naturally, being the Friday before a holiday, but since I'm only working two days next week I need to be caught up. (I did manage to spend some time in chat, up in the afternoon. I am the Chat Princess, after all; I have an image to keep up.)

After some, um, time alone with my husband after work (if you know what I mean)... well, I haven't done much, really. I've been surfing around and reading the board and watching baseball (the Astros won again! yay!) and drinking sangria. A very unexciting evening (other than the sex, at least), which is okay with me. And I have absolutely nothing out of the ordinary planned for the weekend. Sounds kind of fabulous. Next weekend I'm going to be gone the whole weekend-plus (Thursday to Sunday) so a little time at home is a good thing.
